This thread is to talk about rides that happen every year on New Year's Day. I'm not thinking of the "official" club rides, just ones that people know are going to happen and just show up. Here are the ones I've heard about:
- PCH, starting in Long Beach and heading south to OC
- Angeles Crest Highway
- Mountain bike ride up to Saddleback Peak
Any others, or any more details on the above?

PCH ride starts at 7AM... and is a tad fast....
I think that I made it all the way to Laguna last year...
I think there are always a few crashes on the PCH ride (not a surprise with the large number of people)...having broken my shoulder already, I stay clear of that ride.

Last year's PCH New Years ride made for my fastest century. 96 miles in 4:45, and that was with a total of maybe 10 minutes stopping for food and bathroom breaks.

Including an incident with an old lady on the sidewalk near the back bay. I was surprised that a group that size went on a MUP, that's just asking for trouble.

Wow, if you consider it fast, it must really be fast!
Wow, if you consider it fast, it must really be fast!
The pace is quite fast, OC and I were barely able to keep up last year. If you do the ride make sure to stay in the front half of the pack when the group hits the hills on PCH in Newport, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point. That's where people start droping off en masse and if you get caught in a group that drops back then you'll never catch up.

+1 - and Pico too. If those guys say fast, I wouldn't go near the ride (I'd just get dropped out the gate).
The ride up Angeles Crest is supposed to be a good one (I'm joining Vertical Bob this year on that one). It's a tradition and supposed to be really fun with various levels joining. Some go all the way to Mt. Wilson, some turn around at AC - but no matter what, you'll work your hangover off for sure.
I've done the Mount Wilson ride for 6 years, now. I go up early, at 9:00, to avoid the large group of racers, mountain goats, elbowers, and crazies who go up at 10:00. Some guys and girls from my club will be there, too. Some years there are 200 riders there. Last year it rained on top and later down low,(I'm surprised it didn't snow). 2 years back Red Box road was covered with ice. One of my friends, an ex-racer, went around the barriers and tried to go up. After spinning his rear wheel, he gave up. It was 32 degrees when we began the descent. 3 years ago I made it to the summit, even with some ice on the road. Some guy crashed hard on the descent when he hit some ice, and a car went over the side and down into the canyon.
What surprises me the most is the number of riders who don't even bring a jacket, it's O.K. when you are climbing, but turn around all sweaty and go 43 mph in 32 degrees...maybe they have cars pick them up.

 I bet they wont do that again ;)

Ice on AC coming down! Oh, no. When I said I was doing this ride, I was kidding...:p I don't do 32 degrees and I don't do crashes, injury and death (or at least I try my best to avoid it!). Isn't there an easier way back down?

Isn't there an easier way back down? Calm down, M.E. The ice was on Red Box road, not A.C. You don't have to go to the summit, most people don't. Most people turn right and go down A.C. at Clearcreek. Just stay with Bob, or the rest of us, and you'll be fine. It looks like unseasonably warm temps at this point, anyway. You could also go back down Big Tujunga, it's slower, warmer, and has a lot less traffic, and I will go that way if I can convince others to go with me.

You sound like John Wayne..."Now, you just calm down there a bit, missy." ;)
Fine. I expect you (and Bob) to get me down safely as I am so delicate on the bike. :p And personally, I have no problem coming down Big T, so you don't have to convince me! Are you bringing your harem? :D
Harem? Sarah is doing the ride but I'm not sure where she is starting. She may start in Van Nuys with some racers including Sue. Do you know Sue? She is a road racer through and through. Cathy is waffling but she will probably be at the bloat ride, you can ask her then. Caren, I don't know, haven't seen her in a couple weeks. Debbie said no, but it wouldn't matter if she did come because none of us would ever see her, except as she passed us on her way back down.

I think I have met Sue and her husband, but I may be mixing her with another gal (Susie). Cathy may be at the bloat ride?? Awesome - I'll wave at her and your backs as you climb ahead of me. :p Yes, Deb could do the ride twice before I ever summit...that woman is just unbelievable! Well, John, I guess you'll be haremless then. You've still got me...and Bob. :D
Here is a site with a camera on Mount Wilson. The camera is down right now, but I'm sure they'll get it going as soon as the winds stop. Be sure to scroll down and check out the "Best of Tower Cam".

Susie is married to Nelson, neither of them race, but Nelson could. Sue is married to Ron, both of them race and Ron was on the U.S. national team and a top American pro back some years ago. Ron also flew, and crashed, the pedal powered airplane (Dedalus?).
Oh, okay. Nope, never met Sue! Unless she flew past me on one of SFVBC rides! :D

Hi John,
Are you talking about Ron and Sue Skarin? Ron is a living, cycling legend. He was recently inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame. His wife Sue is also a very good racer. I see Ron periodically at local races. I know him by sight but I don't know him personally.
Hmmm, maybe I will try the Angeles Crest ride.
Where do people park for Angeles Crest? I may try to escape from the Rose Parade/Bowl festivities here.
BTW, here's a link to the current conditions on SR2 from Caltrans, although I don't think anything's forecast to change between now and the 1st except for a very slight chance of precipitation.

Cleave, yes, the Skarins. Small world? Did you also know the late Barry Wolf?
jpconrad, you can park anywhere along the route for this ride, many people park in the area of Foothill and Oro Vista and start there. My group will be there around 9:00. Here is a link. http://www.socalcycling.com/Group%20Rides/frGroupRides.htm The people starting in Van Nuys won't get to Foothill until around 10:00, usually.
Conejo Valley Bike Club has a ride on Monday as well. This year it will head out towards Simi Valley and back. Details available on their website: www.cvcbike.org I may do this ride.

:( I can't go to either of the mountains rides Baldy or Wilson . I'm so bumed! You all have fun out there.

Say it isn't so! :( Well, we'll miss you on both rides.
Who else is doing the PCH/Tour of OC ride tomorrow?
If I'm doing any early morning ride tomorrow it'll most likely be the Mt Wilson ride......but it'll all depend how I feel after tonight. I'll check this thread early tomorrow morning.....:D
If I don't ride in the morning, I'll definitely be riding in the afternoon...:)
Happy New Year!

How are you feeling now? Can you move around without too much pain?

George, if you're up for it, I will be at Foothill and Oro Vista at 9:00 meeting a few others. I'm quite tired so I don't know how much I'll do.

Thanks John....We spent the night at a friend's house and we just got home a few minutes ago. I am just too tired to go riding this morning. I think I need a little more sleep. But I will do a short easy ride in the afternoon. :)
Happy New Year!
I'm planning on doing a ride from Back Bay to Irvine park around 10am, back around 1pm. Anyone want to join?

I go from Back Bay to Harvard, left. Then right onto a bike path up to Portola, left.
Right on Jamboree to Irvine park.
Stop have a little snack and return.
It actually took me a few trips to figure this out....

It's only marked once your by the sea though....
I'd love to have a ALL dirt version of this trail so I can mountain bike the entire way...

When they first set it up, that's what I thought it was. Ya right...
However, I know a trail that goes from Rancho Santa Marg to Dohene Beach. All dirt except the last few miles.
That's a pretty good ride, however a lot of it is WIDE dirt road.
I'm leaving shortly.
If your there, keep an eye out. I'll have the BF jersey on.
How are you feeling now? Can you move around without too much pain?
Yeah, I can get around pretty good, although my range of motion in my lower back is still somewhat limited. I'm hoping to be back on my bike by the end of this week, I'll keep you updated. You'll have to give me the lowdown on this mornings ride. Take Care...
I went up to LB for the Lightning Velo ride that started at 8:30 because I went out last night and did not feel like getting out of bed before 6AM so that I could ride up and meet the PCH group.
We did basically the same route (down PCH), but at a much more casual pace. That changed in Newport when there were only four guys left, then three, then two, then the last guy tells me in Corona Del Mar that he is turning around.... so I went to NPC and SJH and swung around to head back north.
It was funny to see tons of people heading north on PCH and realizing that these were the people that got spit out the back of the earlier PCH ride. I ended up hooking up with one of these groups on the way back to LB so I avoided some of the wind (except when I was in front of the line)...
overall, about 60 miles to start the year.

Nice, Phil! Good start to the year - and you claim that you don't train.
I missed my ride with Bob up to Mt. Wilson this morning because I was a lazy ass. I'm heading out now to do the GP loop (very, very slowly). :o

That's what I'm talking about  That beats my 19 :p

Great Fun! I decided not to do the full route and turned back on PCH (with 20 or so others) after the Danapoint rest stop. It was like a race day out there cruising down PCH. I thought for a moment motorcycle cop were going to stop us (We were hugging all the road at times). With so many people, I was afraid of the crashes, so I stayed within 30 or so off the front, which was not easy. Hope there wasnt any crashes. Man, people were in a hurry to get out that rest stop. They took a piss, gulp down a gel, fill the water bottles and headed back out. I was a bit chicken to try the full milege today since I didnt know the route. Definitely great way to start the year.

Glad that you had a good time!
The Mount Wilson ride was f'ing WINDY. On the climb of Big Tujunga I almost got blown to a stop and had to work hard to keep from falling over, got sand in my teeth, etc. It wasn't nearly as cold as usual, but that wind sucked. I went as far as Red Box and some friends went to the summit. Coming back down was the scary part. You get a tailwind and are going 45mph, then cross winds and blowing sand. A tree fell in the road along with a bunch of rocks just ahead of me. I dragged the tree to the side of the road and kept going. This is when I saw the main group coming up. Someone had a personal sag Escalade pacing them up the climb and the pissed-off drivers passing him almost hit me head-on. I go early to avoid that circus, I guess not early enough. Found some more friends at Clear Creek and finished the ride down with them. Got sandblasted one more time for good measure and then an easy 15 mile cruise home. Maybe next year I'll break tradition and do something else.

Hi Phil,
It was good to see you and talk with you a bit. After our first stop when you and I were at the front, the rest of the group was a bit slow in leaving. I stopped at the bridge just before the rise up to Jamboree and waited a minute or so for everyone to catch up. Sorry about the mis-communication.
As advertised, part of our club went up Newport Coast to San Joaquin Hills and back while a group of six of us went down to Laguna Canyon and circled through Irvine to Back Bay and back up PCH. The ride total for me was 73 miles with a 17.5 MPH average. A nice way to start the new year. :)

Wow! Now that's a dramatic ride! And I missed it. Glad you got done safe. Did you see Bob? I'm going give him a call to make sure he got back okay with all that wind and crap, although I'm sure he did.

Don't worry about it, I know that we kept the same pace after you stopped to wait and I did not let up until I stopped for a bathroom break at the bottom of NPC. Heading back was a little bit of a chore, but overall the Lightning Velo people were fabulous to ride with, very personable and strong! Thanks for the invite, I will be sure to turn up some other time, hopefully you and Pat will both be there!
