Ive lived here all my life. First I will tell you that cost of living is high all over the area. But its not hard for a college educated person to find 6 figure jobs, specially engineers. Its a great place to live, lots to do, and some of the best road riding in the country. Not to mention mt biking also.;) Here's a few pics of some of our local rides.

I hope you like climbing cause there are lots of mountians around. Beautiful redwood forests to ride through and you can ride right from you door. There is TeamSanJose.Org is one of the oldest and largest racing clubs also. If ya have any specific questions feel free to ask. We ride year round here too.

i like to climb but am not good at it (250lbs) in Nashville there are alot of short steep climbs...i would imaging they would be a longer and gradual out that way

Well, then I would say the cost of living should not be a problem for you. Alot of folks around here ride both road and mountian cause the views and trails are so beautiful. Here's a few from the Tahoe area which is about 4 hours drive.

There is alot of both. Tomorrow I am climbing Mt Hamilton which is a 19 mile climb at about 4500ft of elevation gain. There is plenty of short steep stuff too, as well as lots of rolling hills and flats. You can ride whatever you want on any given day.

There is a great mix of riding around here, and a very strong riding community. Both are great, I was primarily a mt biker, but have now really enjoyed the road riding the past year. One has complimented the other and there is just soooo much to see that I would highly recomend both.

And aside from biking, we have 2 baseball teams, 1 basketball team, 2 football teams, and a hockey team. Concerts and clubs are endless if that is your thing. Of course lots of stuff to do in the San Francisco area. Snow skiing is as close as 3 hours, many lakes and rivers, great bass fishing. It goes on and on.
There is plenty of short steep stuff too, as well as lots of rolling hills and flats. The flats, however, aren't as much fun as the bottom land in the Santa Clara Valley is pretty well developed. So most of the time you'll be dealing with traffic and stoplights on the flat stuff. Of course, if you like riding in the mountains you can go all day without hitting a single traffic light.
If you can afford to live here, the cycling is hard to beat! There are lots of cyclists and lots of racing, if you're into that.

I IS HERE! :D
San Jo is a awesome city IMO. Mountains all around, the bay is just a short drive off. Santa Cruz and San Francisco are close by, and the downtown is a great place for a younger person (lots of clubs/bars/everything you need without a car). Public transit is also reasonable.
The downsides: rent is insane (I paid $550/mo to rent a bedroom from a 4-bedroom dormitory, and share a bathroom with 3 other peeps), norther cali gets damn cold in the winter (keep your sweaters and jackets!), and you will find lots of ethnic neighborhoods that have little if any english on the signs anywhere (Dakao is a good sandwich shop if you go downtown...I reccomend their bbq pork sandwich highgly....avoid the bbq pork roll though...pork roll is pigfat....kinda nasty).
