Fifty Plus (50+) - I like to go slow

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As of late I found myself riding too fast... up tp 15 MPH on my Trek 7300FX. So I have been riding a couple of single speed bikes to try to remedy this... Even my Schwinn Cruiser Deluxe was too fast. The Specialized Seqouia Elite has gathered dust all year. It has maybe 20 miles on it now.
Now I find myself pushing faster than I want on the BMX cruiser and P.1  I start out slow and try to keep it that way. However after a few miles I find myself pushing it-really getting the cranks spinning:)
Is there any cure for this malady of speed?:D

Try taking a deep breath and relaxing! remember why you are riding when you start picking up speed. If you like it, speed up. If you don't slow down and enjoy the ride, smell some flowers and stop and look at the scenery!

Too fast? Is there such a thing as too fast? I have the opposite problem. When my friends are going 45mph down Angeles Crest, I can't keep up.

Take the 7300 on MTB singletrack.......preferably the advanced section with switchbacks, woops and jumps.
I was able to stop drinking, but try as hard as I might, I can not stop trying(key word) to go faster.
Spin and enjoy.

Just remember, with additional practice and proper training, you could be riding faster.

Well I don't want to speed up. It just happens that way anyhow.:( And I tell myself to slow down-that it isn't a race- and I just end up spinning more anyways. Maybe it is an addiction or compulsion or something...

Its one those silly little things that as we improve- we want to get better even more. On my rides I go at my speed- which is slower than the others that I ride with. But I keep getting egged on into doing these silly little sprints. In my group we have a fit bu**er. He can ride all over me on speed- but IF we ride together and we come across a little slope- I will push him a bit on speed. Then I wait until he is in the wrong gear and I am gone. It's only a 200yard sprint but I have him every time. Then on a 30 mile ride- he will slaughter me. 35 miler and he drops back to me to keep me company and on a 40- I finsih up towing him. I can do 100 miles and just about feel as Though I have done a ride, but there is no way I am a speed merchant. Only thing is that to be able to do the 100milers- you have to find your limit whilst training. That training for me does include a bit of sprint work, but never on the long rides. I know when I am comfortable and don't exceed it. The speed comes in the training rides and are a necessary part of training for the Endurance events.
So you keep speeding up without wanting to. Its about time you did a metric to see how you get on. That'l slow you down pretty quickly.

MOVE TO THE MOUNTAINS!
Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst
They didn't see the stop sign,
took a turn for the worse
She said, "Listen, baby. You can hear the engine
ring. We've been up and down this highway;
haven't seen a goldern thing."
He said, "Call the doctor. I think I'm gonna crash."
"The doctor say he's comin', but you gotta pay him cash."
They went rushin' down that freeway,
messed around and got lost
They didn't care they were just dyin' to get off
And it was life in the fast lane
Life in the fast lane

I like to go slow too.
And it's a good thing that I do like it, for slow is the only speed I have available.
Is there any cure for this malady of speed?:D
I sure hope this thread is a joke. If you truly want to slow down and get the best workout you can give us cycling and start jogging.
I have a FX 7300 and I'm changing the gearing to go faster.

Since you live in Illinois it shouldn't be too hard to find some headwinds to ride into. That should satisfy your need to ride slow. And have somebody pick you up after riding into the headwind. You certainly don't want to be riding with the wind at your back.:)

No ZZTop or Spiderbait on your Ipod.
Replace it with Enya and Barry Manilow.
That'll slow ya a bit.

I did a 30 mile ride this evening, and when I looked at my average speed after I got home, it was a blistering 12 MPH. What's great is that I really had a good time, and was glowing when I came in the door.

Or this:
Another alternative is to not let yourself be goaded by compulsive cyclists who think every bike ride is a competitive or training event.

Thanks guys, you have been very helpful.:D

Maybe you should just click the cycle computer over to ODOMETER and forget about speed. Your body will pace itself comfortably to where it wants to be. Instead of obsesseing about speed you'll just enjoy enjoy the ride, kinda like when you were a kid.

Is this a serious post? If so why don't you want to go fast? The reason may change what the best answer is.
One answer might be a fixed gear or single speed with low enough gearing to limit your top speed.

When I took my puter off my bike I got twice as much riding time in. Why you might ask, because i went twice a slow :-)

If you really want to go slow and truly enjoy your ride, consider packing a camera. Meander along, keeping your eyes open for interesting photo opportunities, and stop whenever the urge strikes you. You may find, as I have, that an entire new and beautiful world opens up to you. Here's a little photo essay of my recent birthday ride. Not saying these are the greatest snaps in the world, but they were all found on a leisurely ramble. Speed was of no importance whatsover, and finding these shots provided me with a lot of fun. It might work the same for you.

Great pictures, Blackberry.
I generally have my camera with me on rides. I also do the time keeping for a volunteer bike group and have a member who generally attaches a picture to his report of things along the trails. I've received pictures of flowers, riders along the trail and lots of animals.

You need to change your definition of slow. See, if you thought 25 mph was where 'too fast' started, you'd already be far enough below that point.
Problem solved!
