Yeah, I'm trying to ween myself off of caffeine, possibly once and for all.

Sadly I keep relapsing....when stims actually help you sleep, it's time to $&%^@*) stop.

That said, one of my many changes to better myself has been to eventually stop taking caffeine altogether. It will be a tough road, but I feel I have to do it. Being dependant on a freaking chemical sucks.....even more so when it's such a common one. Muscle spasms in my eyes and stuff have been pretty common since I started my attempts to quit.

That said, time to find a cheap source for caffeine-free sun drop....possibly the only caffeine free non diet citrus soda anywhere.

Really, it's amazing how something legal and unregulated can be so hard to drop cold turkey....

Sometimes it's smartest to not start habits to begin with, then you won't have to deal with the withdrawal.

I chose not to drink alot of caffeine. I casually drink it if it's in a flavorful drink, but I don't use it to stay up.

That's what I told myself when I was drinking a liter of scotch a day--I liked the flavor.

That wouldn't be considered casual though would it?

I've been eating a lot less caffeine lately. But I wasn't totally hooked, so I'm ok. I ate some coffee beans a couple minutes ago. They were good.

I quit cigarettes 2 years ago on new years eve, It was horrible to quit and I had to warn everyone to stay away from me. I was grumpy at best and sometimes suffered euphoria. now I hate them.

To keep it in perspective, my daily caffeine dosage was:

4 cups of cofee,
6-8 sticks of blackblack gum (equal to another 3-4 cups of coffee)
about a liter worth of redbull.
1-2 cans of mountain dew.

So it's safe to say I was well into WTF territory.

Try cutting back. I limit myself to two cups of coffee in the morning.
I often make some tea in the afternoon. In a big pot I use a couple bags of Happy Elephant Tea, a bag or two of herbal tea of the same flavor, and one bag of Celestial Seasonings Ginseng Energy. I brew for 4 minutes, and not a second more. Sometimes I brew for 3, that makes for an especially light and pleasant beverage that I can drink 2 or 3 cups of without consequence.

IMHO... kill the Red Bull. Just stop.

Well right now the only caffeine sources I have is a single 2-liter of mountain dew (haven't opened it yet, might just leave it in the laundromat for someone to take), and one of the last few packs of blackblack gum. I'm only using the gum when I absolutely need to...one stick per day tops.

That's around 1/2 cup of coffee per day in caffeine levels. That should be rather reasonable.....although I hope to not need this crap at all by the next month.

Downside is being so tired all the time....I wake up feeling refreshed, but my energy levels are so low. I have to do this though, since I have a feeling my sleeping problems are all related to the huge doages of caffeine I have taken over the course of years....I used to have a far higher intake than what I listed......is a 2-liter of espresso per day a good idea of how bad I used to be when I was 20?

I went through 4 months of withdrawl, after giving up caffine. Four months of hell. I was a Pepsiholic for about 15 years. Was drinking 6-8 cans a day, until my digestive system couldnt take it any longer.

Ive been caffine free for 3 years now, and it feels great. Now I cant stand to drink more than a few sips of caffine free pop. Good luck, and stick to it. You will eventually get through it, and its worth going through the withdrawl.

I've been on and off several times over the last few years. right now I'm mostly off for over a year.
I find that you gotta get rid of the easy to use things. no blackblack! it's just to easy to use!

I used to have those caffienated mints sitting next to the bed so in the morning I could pop a few and lay down for a minute and suddenly wake up with energy and fresh breath.
that would get me downstairs for a quad espresso which would get me to work where the coffee drinking would start.

my problem was that I was always tired when on the caffiene, except for brief bursts when the balance was just right.

I have a lot more energy now. I still will have small amounts but I limit it. I drink tea (because it's good for me) but I never really notice any caffiene kick from that anyway. I drink decaf coffee.

the point is, for me, that I'm only going to drink so much tea or decaf coffee. when I have coffee and mints and mountain dew and beans and soda and whatever there's really no stopping. I have that kind of addictive personality.

Funny you should bring up going cold turkey. My wife and I are going shopping today for a manual drip coffee maker and checking out a couple roasters coffee blends. :)

wow - that is a boatload of caffine. I was doing 4 venti starbucks a day at one point. I still drink a lot of coffee but I do "half caff". Basically have regular and half decaf coffee.

Coffee does have some properties that are good for you. I read somewhere its the #1 source of anti oxidants in the American diet. (not sure what that really says...)

I've been smoke-free for nearly five months now, and counter-intuitively (to me anyway, as the two used to go hand-in-hand) my coffee consumption has gone through the roof. Perhaps I'm subconsciously seeking to raise the metabolism that fell through the floor once I gave up the smokes?

Dependency sucks a Spam sammitch.

Puh leeez. I have that much on my way to take a shower in the morning. And I don't measure coffee in cups. I measure it in pots.

Dayum people, I though I was bad when I was drinking 3 22oz Dr Peppers a day. Now I do a cup of coffee in the morning and a one or two soft drinks a week. To those of you trying to quit, I think it would be best to give up the soft drinks first. The carbonation is pretty bad for your metaoblism.

I special order my coffee and they even gave me a free coffee maker.
Get it at Gevalia (http://www.joingevalia.com/promo/Gev0609/promo_002_12cpssc_2sscs.htm?keycode=113827). You don't even have to commit to get the free stuff.

I originally did it for the coffee maker, but really enjoy their product.

I used to measure my coffee intake in pots (3 to 5 a day for over a year). One day I ran out of coffee and just didn't buy any more. I slept close to twelve hours a day for a couple of weeks, and generally a little lethargic. After that, I found my way back in to my regular schedule, but I still found myself a lot less motivated first thing in the morning. I figured that would fade, but after almost a year of that, I started drinking coffee again. I have a "4 cup" (two real cups, one in my 20oz mug) coffee maker that I set to brew automatically about 5 minutes before my alarm clock goes off. That is the only caffeine I ingest for the day. It sits right behind my alarm clock with a clean mug, and now I'm functional in the morning instead of having to hit the snooze five or six times.

Moderation is key to anything, and it really helps me start the day.

Just picked up two manual drip coffee makers similar to the ones used in Vietnamese restaurants. Along w/ some espresso grind and sweetened condensed milk, we'll be having some good, yummy coffee.

why worry so about being addicted to coffee? I admit i'm addicted and could care less... it's not like i have a heart condition. I don't worry about it at all. I don't overdo it and the only time i drink coffee is in the morning. The reason for that is so i don't have trouble sleeping. Why not just limit your coffee intake to morning? Look, it's not like cigarettes- coffee isn't dangerous to your health!

The only real bummer is when I have to fast, like for a blood test or some such thing. EVery once in a while i have to get tested for iron level which means fasting, and the lack of coffee gives me a headache.
