Crank'n is in Perth as is MediaCreations (who I think might be a radio DJ there also).

I lived in Perth from 2001-2005 - in Subi and Warwick. I used to commute by bike from Warwick to West Perth.

Ah... doing an elongated commute from Ferndale (Cannington) to Booragoon at the moment. Don't have the computer on the new bike ATM, but if I recall the old bike thought it was 22km one way :)

Considering a ride upto my mates in Doubleview for a New Years Day BBQ Lunch. No partying planned the night before, so should be doable. Not sure of my exact route, but would estimate about 30km one way.

The good thing about living NOR is I used to get the Freemantle Doctor at my back most evenings. For people commuting SOR it was the opposite.

I imagine you'd get it more or less at your back if you're heading W to E in the evenings.

Yeah, I get it fairly easy, though I do loop around my work destination and come at from the opposite direction from where I live. Push it up a fairly slow incline for the last stretch. That downhill goes straight into the seabreeze on the way home :D

Did the ride upto Doubleview this morning. Quite nice. Mind you, at 08:30 on New Years Day, Scarb Beach Rd was quiet enough to brave and chop a few Ks off. Not long got home from coming via the coast, turning inland at Freo. Bit of a souwesterly blowing in my face up to that point.

Daylight saving? meh.... fairly indifferent with my lifestyle. Just a little cheesed at the government caving into lobby groups and the like obviously pushing it with the three year trial thing - for the sake of business, Especially when the electorate has said "no" at the last two referendums. Still I got two years to make up my mind. My lifestyle may change then :)

I heard them mumbling about extended trading hours as well again the other day. Big business... tsk...

Not being a Sandgroper originally I think DST and extended shopping hours are a good idea. I was quite suprised that the extended hours thing failed in the last election.

I think it's strange that the shops in the city can open on Sunday but they can't elsewhere.

Hey mentat... you're the first fixer I've come across locally. Though not having done any social or competitve riding myself - that's probably not that altogether surprising :) What do you ride?

I have a Surly Steamroller frame on order, and slowly collecting the bits to build it up whilst I'm waiting. Just orded some Deep V rims and spokes today, infact. Still undecideded about exact crank & bb yet - but she's to be a fixie.

With the rest of my day off today I'm building up another old hack for my Bunnings & Bottle-o runs :) My back verandah looks like a semi-trailer has gone through the school bike racks... there's bits everywhere...

not many of us around. I think I was the only one that did the bridges ride in 05 (didnt do 06 'cause I broke my wrist a couple of weeks before). There were 2 of us that did the freeway ride last year. Seen a couple of fixed riders around.

Used to ride with a deep v front but riding over the causway in the afternoon with a howling sea breeze was interesting (plus I found it a bit on the heavy side). Ride a Fuji on the track - good entry level bike. Gave my geared bike to my son, who needs more than one gear anyway ?

I have seen a guy in Applecross once or twice on my commute home from Booragoon riding what appears to be a track bike, but haven't had a good chance to have a look or have a word with him yet. That he's going in the opposite direction doesn't help!

I'm currently on the scrounge to find a suitable track or dedicated single chainring crank for my build. Have done a few Double-to-single conversions on my practice junk verge single speed builds to date - but would like something nice - and that looks right - for the steamroller project. Are there any good for sale or classfied noticeboards out at the velodrome?

What gear do you push? I've been riding my Surly cross-check pretty much exclusively in 53/18 (or 19? dammit.. can't remember) since I built it up.

passed a guy on an Avanti track bike today, looks quite nice but aluminium. Not much around, look in the quokka, ask around at bike shops (I picked up my frame for $50 from a shop). Just high end stuff at the velodrome. Have a look at the Fuji track, works well on the track as well as the street, steel and less than $600.

On the road I do 49/15 but then I hate spinning

Just really introducing myself. I am new to serious cycling (have played with a cheap MTB or three over the years) but have decided to get into serious commuting to supplant my bushwalking which is my main outdoor activity. To that end I have purchased a Giant CRX 1 based on feedback from colleagues and a friend who is big into cycling and hope to pick it up Saturday.

Also does anyone have any good links to websites on training, i.e., suggested programs to build up commuting distances. I have six months before I will be looking to commute around 44 km per day [Churchlands - Joondalup + Churchlands - Fremantle].

Oh, once I get the bike I will post photos of the setup.

I never really attacked my commuting with any specific regimen when I moved to Perth about 6 years ago. I used to be in South Perth, commuting to the CBD for the first couple of years, but as I got used to the routine and bored with the distance I started looping back around via the Canning and then eventually the Mt. Henry Bridges back into the City. Gradually building from less than 5km to nearly 25 one way.

I'm now in Ferndale, commutting to Booragoon. the most direct route is via Leech H'way, 11km the one quiet Sunday morning I did do it. But not having a death wish during the week my short route is 13/14km more following the Canning River via the backstreets. I have a medium route of about 17, and my 'good day' route is closer to 23/24 with a couple of mild hills, where I loop back around from Myaree back to Booragoon. It confuses the hell out of my colleagues when they keep seeing me come from different directions.

I find it just also comes down to breaking the trip up a bit as well... I think my ride is just as much meditation as it a physical fitness thing.
