Foo - Jon and Siu had a new years resolution to lose weight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We have an agreement, so that in the summer we can buy these road bikes, and ride them without breaking them!

We were thinking if we both get into road riding, by summer we might get some kona cyclo bikes. Whatcha thunk?

I like this one because it's the cheapest.

They are not roadies, they are cross bikes. AKA Urban Mountain Bikes. :)

But who says we are really getting them? We are just dreaming, that's all.

In order to do that, I'll have to sell Jon's body. So getting the bike might take a while.

Welcome to the dark side. :D

Kudos on the health regimen! That's always cool.

I'm goin' shoppin' for a road bike soon, but one that I can use in TT, until I buy a real TT bike. I'll post pics along the way of my odyssey, if you guys will. Deal? Jon? Siu? :D

We gotta at least believe we might get them for awhile before we abandon hope. As for selling my body. I charge 100 per night on the magical love boat. We'll get those bikes in like 2 weeks at that rate.

haha...more like road bikes on steroids. The similarities like more towards the roadie ;)

That said, I have thought about getting one at some point, purely for conditioning. Instead I bought an eliptical. Good times :)

I'm also pondering the possibilities. Both daughters work at a local sporting goods store with a nice little bike shop. It turns out they can pro-deal bikes. Usually 20% less than half MSRP.

Oh don't tell us that. I'll have to keep Jon on the streets at least 12 hours per nite now, just to get ours as fast as you'll get yours.

I've gotten in maybe 7 or 8 rides on my new bike.

I must say for a nice cardio workout on the road, something lighter and slimmer would be nice.

Us Yoopers take that as a complement. We are thrifty and know how to save money. ;)

Oh, and just for the record: If someone gave me a road bike for free, I would gladly ride it. Not as much as my mountain bike. But I would never spend money on one (until I get a decent job and I'm rollin' in dough).

Grooved tires, but also the stem is different. It has a mtb style stem. Plus of course the frame geometry is different.

Get steel fixed gear cyclocross bikes now and you won't have to lose weight. Oddly enough, that's what I ride. Plus it's lighter than those Jakes.

Roadies aren't bad at all....they really are smooth riding bikes....plus the tall gearing will never leave you wishing for a higher gear (who the hell can honestly push 53-11 on the flats anyways?)

Taerom, I hate to break it to you......

Riding road improves your mountain bike endurance and mountain biking improves your road riding skills (Like when you have to dodge a jogger and get off the pavement into dee, soft Squirrelly gravel with skinny tires! ), and don't crash! It's two sides of the same world, believe me!

****By the way, Siu, Jon, use the dark side, it makes you stronger than you could ever imagine!http://smileys.sur-la-toile.com/repository/Films_et_TV/starwars-lol.gif

I solved my problem, I finally ordered street tires for my other set of rims and another set of brake discs. now I can just swap my wheelset...lock out the suspension and go street riding :D
eventually I would like to get a road bike too...but I need to sink money heavily into my heep...I mean jeep right now ;)

Yup, fully agree. They compliment each other. I keep trying to think of a fast mountain biker in this area that doesn't do a lot of road riding, I just can't think of any.

I know while I'm out riding my roadie for three hours today I'll be thinking of how much it helps my mountain biking. Of course I'll also be enjoying the beautiful scenery, the agonizing climbs, the 50+ mph downhills, and hanging out with my friends.

If that's your sole source of income, I think you're more likely to get your bikes from riders who die of heart attacks in front of you, than from a store that accepts cash.

Ah yes, but that all depends on what kind of Roadie you are, and each individual's definition of "noodle".

same thing with the city championships here. There were a few roadies in our club that never came out all season, but when it came to the city championships, they came out and absolutely smoked everyone.

Edit: Is it just me? or does that look wrong on paper.....

catatonic

It's just two different sides of the coin.

Roadies focus on constant power output (efficiency if you will), and off-roaders focus on handling skills.

I know my riding style fits more into the roadie category than anything. I focus on going a consistent speed regardless of conditions way too much....it's down to the point that I figured the optimal attack angles/gearing/cadence for the various turns in the club routes...that there gained me around 2-4mph average speed, since I am no longer wasting as much energy trying to pick up speed again.

edit: How it gained me time is I am actually pedaling through the entire turn, and attacking it very aggressively, with as little speed loss as possible. Sometimes I even accelerate through the corners.
