Foo - Trainer Sucks.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I don't climb on my trainer very often. In fact it has been probably about a year. But we have had 3 solid says of rain and i was going nuts. So i went out in the garage, cranked the tunes and logged 45 of the longest most boring minutes of the year.
How do people ride those dreaded things all winter long?

Tons and tons and tons of old school racing DVDs help a lot. No more than an hour or two at a go either.

If you can figure out how to make them more fun PLEASE let me know. I bought a $400 trainer last winter and maybe used it 10 times. I guess it doesn't help that I have to hunch over due to a low basement ceiling. I've attached a mountain bike to mine with a slick tire, however it's still too noisy to listen to the TV. Guess I may have to invest in a set of headphones.
Hey, you started the frikkin topic muffinman. :D

I second the racing videos....I got Hell oh Wheels and The Greatest Show on Earth for Christmas.....way cool....Hell on Wheels is subtitled so it is not as fun to ride to....I have some Spinervals as well....they are pretty good.....
I try to get out if I can so I don't do much trainer time but the above helps....

Good music, doing weights while bike riding and yes singing. I'm not that bad of a singer.

Well, depends on how hard you want to train! If the goal is the toughest workout on the planet, use the Jerry Springer Show and do a windsprint every time a guest acts like a redneck stereotype or acts inappropriately. (You wind up doing a solid hr of sprinting! )
If you can't stand Springer, then use the Maury Povich Show and sprint every time a young lady is doing a paternity test on a guy and he turns out not to be the daddy. Same effect as above:D
Heh...in honor of this thread I suited up all ninja Amphib this morning and did 35 miles in a cold frikkin crosswind out of the northwest and all of about 34 degrees.
And yes Portis, even then it was still far better than riding on a trainer.
Thanks for the motivation. Happy New Year! ;)

Have you tried the plugin for the sony playstation 2. My buddy uses one when he is at work (ok he works in a bikeshop) and says it is pretty fun, especially when you have 2 players. It sounds like a reasonable price to, around 250ish american if I remember. I was thinking of getting one for myself until I picked up the eliptical.

Well, we probably have enough crazies down here for you to work on...
To tell you how bad i hate the trainer...It snowed here over night and is still snowing. I crawled out of bed, put on the platform pedals and studded tires and headed out into a blizzard. It took me an hour and 38 minutes to go 13.2 miles.
The wind was blowing over 30 mph and gusting higher. The snow and winds made for unbelievable restistance and a nice sting to the face. But it was a 100 times funner than riding that trainer last night.

I'm not sure I can keep up that pace. I'll end up with a heart attack

It says on that site it is not longer available. But I know of a shop with 2. So they are still out there. There is also GB 200 and 300.

That sounds like the way to go. Will you let us in on the secret identity of the bike shop Maelstrom?

I would have to ask my buddy. Its a Washington shop he works at so I tend not to remember the name.
I don't care WTF it's doing outside, trainers for the lose!
Of course, I'm a commuter, so most of the worst stuff I've ridden in was just to get to work or back. Makes most anything I've run into on a recreational ride seem pretty bland.
A trainer would drive me freaking batty. My apartment complex has a recumbent style exer-bike and a normal style one too. About 10 minutes of that and I was like "F this, I'm going running!"
That was before I had a bike.

Axon,
Easy to say when you average temperature in the winter rarely dips below 25f. Thats freaking warm. If I lived there I doubt I would ever stay inside either.

Thanks. PM me if you remember to ask.
I find the trainer boring and usually do short high speed workouts. This is great for sprinting and cardio, but does nothing for my endurance.
