When you don't fit the mold society has created for you, does that make you crazy, or are they crazy for following each other like lemmings?

OOPS! I got ahead myself. Question is moot.

All the people I've admired most in history and in my own life have been outside the mold one way or another, so it doesn't bother me at all to be that way.

You can't be extraordinary by being just ordinary.

Still, living outside the die-cast world can be lonely at times.

For those who think I am not normal (i.e. crazy), I tried to be normal once, but then normal changed.

Since I am a 56 year old cyclist, most of my friends (except cyclists) and family (except my wife) think I'm a little off balance.
They say cycling and commuting at my age is dangerous. Actually they think commuting at any age is dangerous!! :D
But they will also be the first to admit to the health benefits of cycling since they have seen my waistline shrink.

I try not to conform to the wishes or ideals of others (other than my wife, but that's a given).
I've done that in the past and it only made me unhappy in the end.

Right on! I totally agree with you there. After living several or more years as a "sweet" doormat, I had realized one day that I should start living my life as I saw it. It was extremely painful to get used to at first, but it felt good to live life on my own terms, and not having to feel that I needed to have some sort of acceptance from those around me. I think it was at that point in my life, where I started to finally live. :)

Perfectly said.
