I currently have a road build that I have put a 8spd 11X28 xt cassette on to get a little better climbing without going to a compact. I purchased the cassette used.
My question is, the lock ring says HG, I thought that 8spd's were IG? Could it have the wrong lock ring on it?
What is the difference between the HG and IG? Can I run an IG chain on a HG cassette?
Thanks

Basically this is a non-issue in practice, especially if you use Sram chains, as I recommend.

HG was sold as a road component and IG as MTB. The differences are minor and not worth worrying about. Shimano's "official" line was that an IG chain could be used with either HG or IG cassettes but HG chains should only be used with HG cassettes. Did it matter? Probably not.
