Any bay area people have any thoughts on this?

I know **** like this is discussed all the time in this forum, and I really refrain from posting, but I wouldn't mind peoples opinions on the article.

Just another "I'm a real _____, go away you poseur ______." article.

I don't really get the fakeanger thing, you have to be a messenger if you like having a bag strapped to your back and a ride a "track" bike on the street? I guess if you're not a messenger, you have to have a road bike, a hybrid bike, mountain bike, or some other sort of non-track bike and panniers?

Sounds like miss dreadlocks is too full of herself.

I'm in agreement with this statement.

Are we being warned that the fashion police are after non-messengers?

Rugen
12-31-06, 01:09 PM
Hinds admits that when it comes to bags, for her at least, fashion has trumped functionality.

"I don't like having stuff everybody else has, but I finally break down and get it," she says, nodding to her Freight bag. "I actually prefer a backpack to a side sling, because of better weight distribution, but ..."

What a tool. She gripes about hipsters not being on their bikes 8 hours a day, but she'll make herself uncomfortable by getting a style of bag that isn't her first choice.

i just hope the hipsters keep riding bikes for longer than they wore their campers. if it's anything like yupis and their fashion dogs, we'll need an spca for fixed gears when the trend passes.

Well read the article and watched the slide show and I have to say that she has only been working 10 months and she's jaded hmm I wonder does it make the kids in sacto look any worse that we don't care as long as you can keep up with us hmm

here are two old school messengers here in town both in their 50s that would smoke her any day of the week

and as far as stylish goes gees those bike were purdier than anyone of mine or all of em put together

as long as your on a bike you are cool with me just ride and ride like you mean it

They should have shot indoors. Unless you do some Photoshop correction, the blue-grey skies of San Franscisco will give you that overexposed, flat, washed-out look.

Sometimes those super big mess bags can be a little overkill. But you can't go wrong with a Flippin Hades or R.E.Load joint if you just have to carry a haul on a bike with no braze on's. But it defeats the purpose for me to ride an 18 pound race bike with 40 lbs. of miscellany strapped to one sholder.

I like to ride light unless I'm shopping, then I take a bike with a rear rack. Tha's part of the allure of cycling for me, the feeling of cutting through the air unencumbered. Like a bird.

Things like this make me very happy to be living somewhere "uncool" where people do things because they like to do them, not to follow or reject trends. So much insecurity on the coasts, damn.

Maybe... sure seems like there's a lot of threads from Coasties looking for exclusive messenger bags, NJS parts, hating on people for having Pistas, trackstanding on bars, etc. The few mainstream media mentions we've got around here has been more focusing on the novelty of biking / alleycats / messengering than worrying about clothes and gear. I guess we've got a couple of years before biking partisanship appears - still too underground and hilly for most people.

onetwentyeight
12-31-06, 08:52 PM
perhaps. there is deffinately that element here, but the fixed gear community here is pretty secure and friendly, and overwhelmingly enthusiastic about riding and racing, and cycling in general. i would not rush to judge a city based on newspaper articles and internet forum postings :)

12-31-06, 08:54 PM
yeah I hate to say it but the sf and sacto scenes are kinda tight with eachother the sf oakland kids come to town they stay with friend of mine or their families in town and we all party and ride
