I thought I once heard or read that instead of installing the BB with the bearings in the retainer that you can put them in there freely without the retainer and thus increase the number of ball bearings and therefore also increasing the surface area creating a more durable BB. Are any of you doing this and how many balls are you adding?

The general rule is to put in enough bearings to fill the cup (same size as in the retainer), and then removing one.

I have heard of it but never knew anyone doing it. I have the Superbe BB myself, and it still has the retainer and it's been going strong for over 150,000 miles; so how much more durable to you want it?

Just because of this question I broke out my repair manual, and it just stays with the stock set up with no mention of a possible modification.
