Well this morning was going just fine, I was in bed sound asleep. I was dreading getting up because I knew as soon as I did a spaceship was going to come out of the middle of nowhere and smash straight into my head. For fuel this spaceship used margarittas and many, many bottles of corona. Don't ask how I know what it used for fuel, I just know! :o This spaceship only seems to find me about once every three or four years, I guess I'm pretty lucky.

Anyway, as I'm laying there in bed asleep or passed out, no reason to split hairs on this one, my dog goes nuts. I figured maybe an ant was walking across the yard or something and she wanted me to know about it. No such luck. I look out the window and see this in the ditch in my front yard.

I immediately threw on some clothes and headed out front. First thing I did was check on the driver, he seemed to be fine. Asked him a couple of basic questions, everything checked out. All he had was a nice gash above his right eye, could probably take a couple stitches but he chose not to. Next thing I did was started picking up car parts out of the road to avoid anyone else getting a flat or anything like that. After this the driver decided he wanted to try to move the car, luckily it is rear wheel drive. I was able to set on the back of the car which allowed it to get enough traction to come out of the ditch. He was then able to move the car into my driveway.

Next a couple of my neighbors walked over to check on the driver and her (my neighbors) fence. Unfortunately he took out a couple of fence posts. Next step he came into the house to clean himself up some. When he came in my wife imediately recognized him. Once she said his name I recognized him as well, he was a friend / ex-coworker of my wifes. Well now we chit chat a little and find out that the car isn't even his, it belongs to the lady he is house sitting for......oops. She is out of town and won't be back until Thursday. All I can say is that I'm glad I don't have to tell her.

Next step, time to start working on a fence. We had to get right on that so that the cattle wouldn't get out into the road. Have you ever tried to set poles and tighten up barbed wire when your head feels like it is going to explode? In case you haven't let me just say this.......I'm never getting in a spaceship that is fueled by margaritas and corona again!!!!

Anywho, we get the poles set, get the fence tightened and then get to come back in the house. He cleaned himself up a little more while I layed on the couch watching the room spin, not a good feeling. He attempted to call some of his friends to come get him but no luck. We finally decided we would just run him home, he only lives about 40 minutes away. Oh, for the record in this instance "we" actually means my wife. There is no way I would get into a car at this point. I may be an idiot but I'm not an idiot that would put other people's lifes at risk.

Well, thats the not so short version. Just thought I would share. :o

Oh, for the record the past three days haven't been that great either. My dad had problems with his septic tank and we had to put a new one in. Problem was we couldn't get anyone with any equipment to come out so we had to dig the hole for the tank and the lines by hand. I spent three days shoveling. This hasn't really been my idea of a great long weekend.

Thanks Stacey, always nice to be reminded of how good I have it. For the record though I'm not complaining about having to help my dad. Sure I would have rather been out riding but that's beside the point. They have done plenty for me, I couldn't imagine not helping my parents when they need it.

He's lucky the cops didn't come and haul him away! My friends and I hired a car & driver to take us around to the various parties, pubs and clubs last night. Cops were out in force and I saw at least 20 people getting arrested and about 5 cars being towed and impounded. Funny thing was going through to LA, the freeway billboards were flashing "Report drunk drivers, call 911". Yeah right, in LA traffic, with the numbers of people talking on cell phones and swerving, impatient people tailgating & weaving in & out of traffic, etc. they were probably getting 100 calls a minute! What a good idea...

Danno, he was sober. This happened this morning. That doesn't mean he was sober. It means you would expect that he was sober.Yeah, there's actually quite a few drunks that wake up early in the morning after having passed out the night before. Some of them are STILL legally drunk and are definitely impaired, like you! ;) At least you're self-aware enough to know not to drive. Strange part is when I'm well beyond that point to where I'm falling over and can't even walk, I can still hop on a bike and ride a perfectly straight line... :)

LowCel, he was very fortunate that you were home and of good enough mind to help him out. He was fortunate that he wasn't killed. You all were fortunate that he didn't run into your house and have fatalities. He was fortunate that he didn't die.

I think the year started out way better than it could have been.

It was a hard morining for you but this episode ends in such a positive light. Your feelings of the spaceship will go away and after you have rested, you will then feel so much better. You are a good person, LowCel. No, a WONDERFUL person. So generous and full of compassion. What better way to start the new year knowing you were there for him? :)

((hugs)) to you and Happy New Year!

Suspension, axel, wheel, radiator, front clip, headlights, sensors for airbag, airbag, grille, wheel wells, signal lights....

ya know....

DannoXYZ
01-01-07, 02:11 PM
Yeah, that looks pretty severe. Definitely the right-front suspension A-arms (wheel looks salvagable). There's most likely some major frame damage from the looks of that front-bumper. Looks like the radiator barely survived, so the engine should be OK. But low-hanging accessories like the AC-compressor or alternator might have been taken out. What a waste of a nice car...

I wonder what the car-owner's house looks like, I might not trust such a person too much with watching it... Reminds me of... Risky Business !!! :)

Will need fenders, grille, bumper, hood, tie rod, ALL The front suspension parts on one side, wheel, radiator, quite a bit of front clip frame work, possibly a steering rack and a bunch of other stuff (who knows how much under the hood is toast)

I'm betting that insurance writes that car off.

I hope you get to deal with insurance companies quite speedily.

I was rear-ended on Dec 23 and have had to deal with quite a few delays (even more, seeing as everyone's closed today). I hope the companies you deal with are faster!

Sisu,
I has to do with the angle of the impact, the more sideways the impact the less like the airbags are to deploy. My former sister in law had a baby beemer (300 series) and was in a wreck at an intersection, her airbags did not deploy. BMW came out and measured and calculated everything and said that the angle was off by about 3 degrees past where the airbags would deploy. My son on the other hand planted the right front wheel of his Ford Taurus into a safety bollard at 12 mph and blew both airbags and totaled the car:eek:

As the impact gets more and more lateral, there's less and less forward motion. A steering-wheel or glove-box airbag deploying on a side impact would smash you into the seat pretty hard...

Yes, feeling much better. However, I'm back to the being sore thing from digging for three days. I can't wait to get back to work so that I can get some rest. :D

I didn't notice if the driver's side bag deployed but the passenger side didn't deploy because there was no passenger in that seat. BMWs have seat sensors to avoid unnecessary airbag deployment.
