Mountain Biking - GT, is it still any good?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I just recently bought a GT Avalanche 3.0, to find out that GT's are not so good any more. Whats the difference. They are not sold in discount stores, and they still make them the same, just coz theyre sold by a company that distributes discount bikes, dosent mean theyre discount bikes. Ive always loved GT's, but when people say GT's are not good any more, does that apply for my bike, as it is not the "TOP OF THE RANGE" GT bike?

I may be wrong, but something happened between GT an huffy not too long ago (im not sure if its still in effect). Im not sure if it was a merger or if huffy bought gt. I could be wrong but I remember something to that effect. Anyway, its understandable how a bike company's reputation could go down the tube when a company like huffy takes over. I hope I didnt just make a false statement.

heres a pic of my bike, a VERY bad pic. lol :D
As far as I know GT went bankrupt and Pacific bought it. Pacific is a "toy store bike", as all of us know; it doesn’t produce as good of a product  as “real” bike companies. The outcome is obvious. Where did you buy yours?

In my understanding, GTs and Schwinns in the US will be Pacific's attempt of a high end department store bike, but GT (still under Pacific) will still produce LBS quality bikes in the world market, you being in Australia will not be effected by the lapse in quality.

Thats right, pacific.....Thanks for clearing that up
Middi-zon has it right in terms of its affect on the quality of the bike you bought. However, GT is still producing bikes of the same caliber as before they were bought by Pacific. Schwinn is the brand with Xmart bikes and LBS bikes.

I bought mine from a LBS, at $400, came down from $550, that is in Australian dollars by the way. One more thing, at the front of my bike, above the GT logo, its got a pretty small, but deep scratch, would a car body liner sticker (which fits the scratch perfectly) be suitable for a bike?

GT frames from what I understand will still be good frames. Pacific is going to try and keep the quality somewhat equal to the older GT's. Where they may skimp would be with the groupo(i.e. drive tran., brakes, etc, etc, etc.). The other bad part of the deal, no one is realy sure how warranty claims will be handled.
One thing that is interesting though is going to see how Lopes' new ride works out for him. GT and Jamis have a crazy looking front triangle. Both bikes would be identical if not for the rear suspension designs.

As far as I know, GT is still a good brand. They are up to date on research and development and it's not like the hardware for producing quality frames with butting and lightweight alloys and the like is up in smoke just because Pacific's business policy has allowed it to outperform GT. As I understand, the current idea is for GT to operate under Pacific the same way Dodge operates under Daimler Benz. The products didn't change, just the end-destination of the profit. Hopefully they don't change their minds.
I bought a GT 200ZR road bike last year from a lbs and received a real good discount. All Ultegra components. So far so good. I have not seen any new GT road bikes.
There are no GT road bikes anymore. They're leaving that to Schwinn now.

I bought a 2001 GT I-Drive 4.0 before they went bankrupt. Then 1 month after they went bankrupt, i cracked my frame at Killington. I sent in for warranty and after like 1 year, they sent me the 1.0 frame, which is 3 steps up from what i had bought. I have had my new frame since last July, and I have no complaints what so ever.
The only bad thing was that i sent it in right when Pacific was debating what to do with GT warranty claims, after they decided adhere to the warranty, i got my new bike.
pacific has decided to run gt as gt there were some tough times last year with the decision on what to do, but what it came down to is gt is gt i think they are even using the same factory and whatnot. gt still rules and always will (this is just my opinion im sure there are better bikes out there) I cant wait to get my rukus frame!
