I've always heard riders rag on other riders that used bells on their bikes. But much to my suprise, I noticed a bell on another rider's bike the other day. One I never expected. So that makes two riders with bells, and what is suprising is that the two riders with the bells are two of the biggest badazzes I know!:D

on my mtb's...gotta have them then!!!
Bells are awesome, nothing says 'Get the **** outta my way' like a little ring from the bell.
Telling people 'On your left' always causes them to look over their left shoulder and move slightly to the left...

"get the **** outta my way"?
OK now, does that start with an "H" or an "F"?:o
I use a whistle....
blow it low on the MUP..and its loud enough for someone in a car to hear it!
Works on mtbs and in tunnels...
depends on who the bell is speaking to...

A little too old to have a bike with a big bell and a license plate. Especially a license plate that says Janet. Do you know how many funny people ask if my name is Janet?

Oh, you're not that much older. I'll be 44 soon. I had one of those bells on one of my bikes. People on the trail seemed to get annoyed by it!:D
No bell for me...I like to say 'good morning'...unless it's afternoon...then I change it up. :p

Well I guess I'm just a talented rider. I can ring the bell and say "good morning"!:D

The thought of using a bell at the beach has seriously crossed my mind a time or two. I was also thinking about maybe strapping one of those sports air horn deals to the top tube and blasting away at anybody that gets in front of me.

We ride to the beach most of the time . I won't dare ride along the beach with all the people on the beach path. Usually the wind in the ears, most don't hear me call out cause I'm a pretty softspoken person.
The bell just seems to pierce the wind and air. Myfriends used to laugh at me and call me a Fred.:p Now that they see how effective it is, they all yell,"ring the bell" when we pull up on other riders.

I bought a bell when I was in Holland, cuz it was easier to buy the bell than to learn to say "on your left" in Dutch. :D

Whatever you do, don't compromise safety. Not sure if it's true or not, but I heard one of the girls that rode up to the ski lifts on Saturday crashed. Image what could have happened if she had been reaching for a bell!:p

I use a bell on my mountain bike only.
But if I rode my road bike on bike paths very often, I'd have one on my road bike as well.

Yeah...I heard that too. Apparently she's on a every Saturday crash schedule...what a dumb ass!

From what I hear, last week she tested out the "the rider in the back goes down if you touch wheels" theory while going downhill and she wasn't sure that it applied going uphill. She has to learn everything the hard way, so she tested the theory again, but with that minor variable. Her report is on my desk and yep...theory still holds true!

If I frequented MUPs, river paths etc with lots of pedestrian, beach cruiser, inexperienced rider traffic etc, I'd consider it. Since I mainly stick to roads which lends itself to more experienced riders, I don't have many problems with the 'on your left' warnings. On the other hand, it's not like I'm passing many people either... :p
i think if you had a bell you might be distracted.
Yeah...and apparently I don't need anymore distractions!

No bell, but I have a horn on my mtb:

and this one on the way for my other bike:

I didn't use them in the past - but have had some near collisons while mountain biking. I now have "horns" on both mountain bikes. Just yesterday I used it and the rider coming the other way told me as I past that he heard it and thankfully knew to pull over - collison adverted! There's lots of cool ones out there now. Mine are all glitterly and girly looking - and easy to use. I just pop it with my palm and it makes an "ah-uuuu-ga!" sound. I still haven't put one on the road bike. Maybe I should reconsider.
better uncool then dead... ok at least hurt badly. I personally think the truly cool don't worry about looking cool... :p  :D

Funny, I did the same thing back in 1989 but it was because I saw/heard a Dutch rider using one. I had it on my Giant for years and it was great. I keep thinking I need to add them to my current bikes. Of course, an air horn might be good too :)

I use a bell on my mountain bike because when I ride urban trails here in L.A., most do not understand "on your left".

Yes...she did, never mounted it on the Bianchi. Of course, I followed suit shortly thereafter. Surprisingly, I don't miss it much.

Telling people 'On your left' always causes them to look over their left shoulder and move slightly to the left...
Then just say "on your right" as you pass on the left.
Disclaimer: DON'T
a bell is definately uncool...

Oh yeah - screaming "out of my way" "coming through" is so much cooler... :p
I see more and more horns and bells on bikes nowadays - people like having weird little horns - it's bling for the bike. Never wrong!

bells are not ocp friendly...they add extra weight, your vocal cords do not....
