View Full Version : Cycling around Big Bear?
I'm gonna be in the big bear area next weekend. Anyone know any routes or know of any websites that would have some routes for that area?

Laps around the lake are fun, I don't have a route, but it's pretty easy to figure out. If you want to climb, and the road conditions are good, ride down the backside (Hwy 38) as far as you like, and climb back up. The highest point is Onyx Summit, somewhere around 8400', it's the highest paved road in SoCal.

The climb up the 18 (Apple Valley side) is on my must do list. I've driven up it many times, but not on the bike. There are some awesome switchback sections. Agreed on the MTB trails up there. I covered the whole mountainside at Snow Summit one day during Labor Day weekend. It was epic!

Cool, I'll try this. Hows the traffic in Big Bear? Lot of cars on Hwy 38?

18 down towards Apple Valley and 38 down towards Redlands generally have fairly low traffic, as they are the alternate driving routes.

What road should I take to do laps around the lake? It's supposed to pretty cold this weekend in Big Bear :(

The snow level is supposed to get pretty low in the next couple of days, hopefully the conditions will allow you to ride. The roads are plowed, but be careful of ice, slush, and cars that don't know how to drive in those conditions. The route is pretty self-explanatory once your up there. You can take this loop in either direction, on the South side, you can stay on Big Bear Blvd, or you can follow the smaller side streets and stay closer to the shoreline. It would be pretty difficult to get lost.
