Bicycle Mechanics - $49.95 rolled tool kit on Nashbar - quality?

I just built up my first bike and currently own the following tools:

- Good socket set and screwdrivers
- Hex set
- 1/8" Chain whip
- Lockring wrench
- Chain tool

It has some things I already own, but one can always use more hex wrenches. I'd basically be duplicating the Park Tools chain tool I just bought, and getting a 3/32" chain whip out of the deal (although I really don't need that). I do get the following useful tools that I'd probably own eventually:

- BB tool
- Crank puller
- Spoke tool
- Better tire levers
- Pedal wrench

So essentially I'm asking: is this still a good deal and are the tools good enough for a non-professional?

Most stuff that Nashbar sells work just fine. I don't have experience with their tools specifically, but if the tools that you'd get are worth the money to you, buy it.

Since you already have lots of tools, I'd recommend just buying the 5 tools you listed separately if that's all you'll add by buying the kit. For the $50 you spend on the kit, you can definitely buy what you've listed and get better quality than the kit. In general I think kits are good deals (I have the Spin Doctor $100 kit from Performance), but you won't be adding much with the kit you listed, so unless you need duplicates of tools, just buy the missing tools individually.

Yes. I have an off-brand tool kit (ascent?) and the tools work fine. Park will last longer and are a lot nicer, but will cost more.

Spend some money on a nice work stand :D You will really enjoy the time and effort it will save you.

Nice stand, no doubt. But this one (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=3636) is more than adequate for a home wrench.

If those are the only tools you are in need of right now, I'd suggest looking on ebay. I just won an auction with a chain tool, pedal wrenches, spoke wrenches, and some other stuff for $9. I have about the same needs as you, and I see a lot of good deals on ebay for the stuff.

The only thing that you may want to buy retail is a nice hex set. Performance bike has a $20 set that looks good.

I bought the $100 Performance team tool kit, and it literally had everything I needed, including a full set of cone wrenches (which is expensive to buy solo). I think it was totally worth it, and I can't imagine that you'd see a vast difference in tool wear between Park and Nashbar for the amount of repair you're doing.

I got the big Nashbar tool kit for Christmas. It has everything I need and then some, and I had a few tools already. I'll get back to you on the quality. My father is a master truck and tractor mechanic, and he thought these would help with my home repairs, as I have a well stocked shop at work.
