Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 1897 one speed bicycle adventure

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
There is an interesting article about some soldiers riding bicycles from Missoula Montana to St. Louis Missouri in 1897. Just type in 25th infantry bicycle corp and take your pick of sites that have the article.
The 25th was one of the famous "Buffalo Soldier" army divisions of the American west. Many of the members were black members of the Seminole nation, who lived in the Oklahoma territory.
Here's a pic of the 25th in action:
Imagine the "bone Jaring" riding one of those across the plains would be like. My wrists hurt just thinking about it. I appreciate their effort and service, thanks guys.

Huh?? Those bikes rode on old-fashioned wide tubulars! I'll bet the ride was smoother than a beach cruiser today!!
Check PBS for your local listing, they run a movie about these guys from time to time. I believe it's called the Black Bicycle Corps. or something similar. Very good viewing.
The guy that was the mechanic on the trip had his work cut out from him. Up early, in to camp late, always having to catch up because he was fixing other people's bikes. Amazing.

Uh-oh, no helmits ;)
Speaks volumes I think about all the 7+ speed bicycles made of carbon fiber... My LBS guy seemed a little inquisitive -- "you're going to commute on a single speed?" "Yep, its all I got and all I'd really prefer" -- though I must admit sometimes I think about 3-5 speed hubs.
