Southern California - 2007 Griffith Park Night Rides - Official Thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

WEATHER REQUIREMENTS: GOING FORWARD, AND CERTAINLY THROUGH WINTER, WE WILL NOT RIDE IF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS EXIST (BY 6:00 PM IN BURBANK):
1. RAIN, EITHER LATE IN THE AFTERNOON OR OCCURRING (I.E. IF THE ROADS ARE WET/SLICK, THE CANYON WILL BE A NIGHTMARE)
2. BELOW 50 DEGREES. IF THE RIDE DOESN'T START IN 50+ DEGREE WEATHER, THE RIDE DOESN'T START (FOR ME, ANYWAY :P)

Okay, based on feedback (thank you all so much), I want to get these started again for 2007, beginning next Wednesday, January 10th. These will continue every THURSDAY until all of you get sick of me and I have no one to ride with in the dark :p . Also, I propose that on weeks that I can't make it (there will be some), you guys go without me (i.e. this isn't MY ride...it should be viewed as the group's ride). Rain will cancel (at least for me), and all I ask is that when I bump this thread up each week, those attending just post "I'm in" so that I know I'll have a ride partner(s). I will also note if I'm not able to make it. So, here are the details:

Meet: Pickwick Bowling Alley Parking lot on Riverside Drive
Address: 1001 W Riverside Dr., Burbank, CA 91506-3212.
Time: 6:30pm, roll shortly thereafter
Duration: apprx. 1.5 hours (sometimes a little longer, sometimes a little shorter)
Description: Down Riverside, into park and up into the canyons and back. Loop will change periodically to keep things interesting - suggestions welcomed!
Tempo: Moderate - but no one dropped or left behind (certainly not in the dark!)
Dinner: Optional - at Patty's now since we are all sick of Vive La Fresh.

ME, apprec the orginizational efforts it is certainly a worthy ride and I plan on joinning. Is there a way you could make this thread a sticky so no one will have to bump it up?

Hi Serg. Great idea and I'm asking if possible. But there may be a limit on how many stickies can be a that top of a forum. I'm not sure.

I think it should just go in the stickied 'Upcoming Rides' post which is stickied. People should be able to find it in there and it'll get bumped pretty often anyway.

Lights necessary? Dont have any quite yet. I ride there all the time, just not at night, and not with a group.

Hi Amo, yes, lights are very necessary! Up in the canyon there are no lights (no cars either) and the pavement has some rough patches in it. Of course, with lights from the city and/or moonlight, it's not pitch dark. I have a HID, but I'm neurotic. You don't need something that powerful, but a good light can't hurt!

I got a nice light this morning, and some reflective gear.

I'm up for it... see you on Wednesday. I'm warning you, though, my normal bedtime is about 9:30 so if I get cranky that's just the way it is.

Bags! My knee has been acting up since last wednesday when I rode Mandeville in the overly cold morning. That means I need to take it easy for a week, light riding and no climbing :( Of course, I rode 48 miles including La Tuna Canyon yesterday, which didn't make things worse, but didn't seem to help as I hoped it would. So alas, I'm out this week.

merider1
01-08-07, 08:39 AM
:( Sorry you can't make it, Ron - but rest those knees.

Yes, George, I think we will have nicer temps this week. I'm looking forward to it! :)

I'll be working on my front der. tonite so I can make this ride. Hopefully I can get the problem fixed w/o having to take my P.O.S bike in to the shop. If I do make it, I might meet with you all over by the entrance to Travel Town instead of Pickwick Bowl.

...or you can leave the chain on just one ring only and do the ride....:) What exactly is the problem?

When I do any climbing while in the 42 ring w/o any notice the bike will shift down to the 30, which is something that it started doing the last couple of rides. The strange thing is that when I try to shift back up to the 42 my left shifter acts as if it is frozen. Then when I stop and restart in the 30 I'm able to shift up but it skips the 42 and goes straight to the 52. After that I can shift back down to the 42. Strange huh?My gruppo has like 12k on it and this is really the first time I've had any mech. problems. Any ideas? I've got the Zynn book and I was thinking of servicing the der. myself. A friend told me that he thinks that the cable itself may be the problem?

^^ Cable tension needs to be adjusted most likely.

Sorry I couldn't make the ride tonight, I tried really hard but my route was heavy today. I clocked out at 7:15pm... bike and gear all ready to go, waiting inside my vehicle. Sigh, oh well theres always next Wednesday.

Instead I shall enjoy a Davidoff cigar and partake a few bottles of Samuel Adams on my balcony, and will spare a thought or two for my comrades conquering the quiet darkness of Trash Truck Hill. Hmmm perhaps I shall summon a pizza to my humble abode as well...

Don't even sweat it, Sal. I, the organizer, couldn't even make it due to work and a stupid presentation. :( I hope you boys who did go had fun. Thanks, George, for listening to me whine and for leading the way. I'm out there next Wed for sure. No board meeting and my boss is out of town. :D
