For those whom are interested, Cruisin' the Conejo 2007 - Saturday, May 12, 2007.
Ride Descriptions:
21 mile Scenic Cruise
This ride takes you through the Conejo Valley communities of Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village. The route is not completely flat. There are a few hills going into and out of Hidden Valley. This is a short-cut tour, taking about 14 miles out of the 35-mile route. Most of the 21.2 mile ride is on bike paths.
35 mile Scenic Cruise
This ride takes you through the Conejo Valley communities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Oak Park, and Agoura Hills. There are a few hills (1500 feet of climbing), but most of the ride is on bike paths. The ride is actually 34.8 miles, but we thought you wouldn't mind if we rounded up.
62 mile Challenging Metric Century
The challenge starts midway through the Scenic Cruise as you make the famous Rock Store climb up Mulholland into the Santa Monica Mountains. There are breathtaking views that are certainly worth the stop as you catch your breath. The descent down highway 23 back into the Conejo Valley will remind you of the excitement of the old "E-ticket" rides at Disneyland. The ride takes you through Hidden Valley before returning to the start point. The ride measures 61.8 miles and has 4500 feet of climbing.
68 mile Moderate Metric Century
If your heart sinks at the sight of the climbs in the Challenge Metric Century then you will love this extended metric route. You start off with the 34 mile scenic route and then join the Full Century riders in Hidden Valley and cruise down into the Oxnard Plain, returning to the Conejo Valley through the communities of Moorpark and Simi Valley. The ride measures 67.9 miles and has about 3000 ft of climbing.
103 mile Full Century
After riding the Challenge Metric Century through the Santa Monica Mountains you will descend into the rich farm lands of Camarillo in the Oxnard Plain, returning to the Conejo Valley through the communities of Moorpark and Simi Valley. The ride measures 102.8 miles and a full 6000 ft of climbing. A challenge for the serious century rider.

I will be doing the 103 mile Full Century. Would love to have some company ;)

As we discussed the other day, I'll likely sign up for this one. I've done the Century twice. The bulk of the climbing is in the first 50 miles; 4500' worth, with the balance afterwards. That first 50 gets you Rock Store, down Encinal, up Decker/Mulholland and down Westlake, HV then up/down Potrero to Camarillo.
However, I did tell Vicki (wife) that if she wants to do one of the shorter courses, I would ride with her. We've wanted to do an organized event together and it would be fun for me to try something different that would pump her up!

I'd like to see if I can do the 62 or 68 route. I doubt I'll be up to a century by then but it can be a goal to shoot for.

Our group of guys did this last year and it was a great ride, except the slippery downhill at one point. I'm now sure of this year as the defacto leader, of our loosely bound group of riders, got hit by a car and may not even be back on a bike by this summer. I liked the ride and hope to convince some of my buddies to go, but I'm not sure at this point.

This one is right down the street from me, so I'll probably do this one. It'll be nice to do a ride that doesn't involve spending the night anywhere or driving hundreds of miles. I'd imagine if the route is historically good, this will be a popular one around here for all the Century-a-Monthers. It also seems like good training for the Mulholland Challenge.

I've done this two years in a row. I rode last year with the Colavita guys. It was a great ride! It's on my list of 2007 planned rides, I think. :D

This is one of my favorite rides. Can't beat the scenary - can't beat those great boy scouts who hold your bike and refill your water, challenging routes, it's got everything!
If you have never done Conejo I would strongly suggest giving it a try!
big john
2 years ago we happened to be out there riding and I saw the rest stop and it took a minute before I realized what it was, in the meantime those boy scouts almost pulled my bike from under me!

I randomly bumped into the ride last year. I was riding Mulholland and started passing by dozens of people and rest stops before I realized what it was.
I'm in for this one.

I'll be doing this ride again this year. Thinking of stepping up to the 35 mile option. Me and my four kids. The green triple pulling the tandem trail-a-bike. Wave as you pass.

Now that's a family that plays together! :)

I'm sure you can do the 68. It's basically TO to Agoura, then Hidden Valley to Camarillo, up Santa Rosa and around to Moorpark, to Madera and back to TO. so, the only real climbing is coming out of HV and up through Dos Vientos.
The 62 covers the big climbs so if your knee is still bothering you, that wouldn't be a good option.
Or you could do a hybrid version if you want a little work: after Rock Store, cut across Mulholland instead of dropping down Encinal and then do Westlake and HV. The total ride would be closer to 57.

My knee is now bothering me of the bike too, and my brother-in-law who is studying kinesiology says it sounds like a ligament tear and I will probably have to take a full month off. Hopefully the doc will tell me tomorrow.

Yeah, those boy scouts are SERIOUS about valet parking your bike while you grab some munchies.
I'll do this one since it's right near home.

Does anyone have the route slip for the Century route from years past?

If I can get that Saturday off, I'm in. I've been wanting to do this ride for awhile. Wanting to do it when I had Saturday's off. Now that I work them I need to do it.

This is a great ride! I did the 68 last year and loved it (with the exception of that slippery downhill referred to above!). I'll have to miss it this year though... the ex-husband is out of town and I'll have no childcare :(
... next year though!!!

In! I love riding in the Canejo. I'll take as much of that as I can get til it gets a little too toasty for me.
Don't forget about the Tour de Cure which is also in the Canejo the prior weekend for anyone who wants a preview (though I have no idea if the routes are similar). MarkAJ & Herb have a fundraising team going which I still need to sign up for.

I'll be there, haven't decided whether I am doing the Century or the challenging metric, my wife's TnT group that she is mentoring will be doing the easy metric as a training ride for the Lake Tahoe century. It just depends on how fast her group is riding. If they are slow, I will do the century for sure.
May is the month that I try to be like Joel & M.E. and ride 4 or 5 centuries in 5 weeks.
nesdog
I've done the Century twice and am now considering doing one of the metrics. I've thought it might be fun to do a slightly shorter distance and see if I can up my average speed since I won't have to pace myself quite as much. Just a thought.
I bet what I end up doing is grinding out the 1st part of the challenging metric in the SM's and then after Hidden Valley, making a decision. It will be a spur of the moment shot. Probably will hit the full if I'm riding with folks.

I'm signed up for the 68. Will be riding with a friend who's quite a bit faster than me, so I expect to be dropped like a hot rock and may well be looking for some company! Is anyone going to ID their bib number in anyway so we can identify Bike Forum folks?

It's a good idea. I'll probably wear my red/black BF jersey.

I just signed up. So how hot is this going to be?

I just signed up. So how hot is this going to be?last year was cool, overcast and misty. This year, I'd guess it'll warm up pretty well mid-day. Temps aren't usually too bad in that area until late June, I don't think.
vc_rider
I've done this ride several times and the weather is usually pretty nice. But with the weather we've been having lately, I'll probably wait to sign up that day since it's only a $5 late fee. We're planning on the 68-mile route on our tandem this year.

Registered and going to do the Century.
Everyone still up for this? Should be a great ride. That route is really enjoyable.

I hope its nice and cool that day. 95+ deg days are not that great for 100 miles!
Saturday was pretty warm. I could not make it to the SB ride but I wanted to get in 50+ miles before the day ended so I went out to the valley and then back up through the SM mountains for some climbing.
Either I'm seriously out of shape or I just forgot how to ride in the heat. Half way up stunt rd. I felt like I was going to lose my lunch and turned around. 95 degrees did me in. Maybe riding around the valley at 2 pm on a warm day is just retarded... =)
Maybe I just need to adjust to riding in the heat once again.

We never had any sun last year! The previous year was coolish due to a passing storm. Year before that was sunny.
The majority of the climbing is in the first 50 miles, nearly 4500'. On this ride, I've been out of the SM's by a bit after 10 so it's not too bad. After that, you drop to Camarillo and pick up some cooler sea breeze. So what you've got left in the afternoon (last two times I've hit rest stop on Santa Rosa at mile 66 by noon) is a mild climb towards Moorpark and then some work back up Madera to TO. So hopefully any warm day really won't be impossible.

We can't talk you into doing Heartbreak on the last Saturday in May, I thought you always had a least two centuries a month, whether it was two singles or one double.
1955
I did this ride last year and enjoyed it. But this year I can't get any of my buddies to drive all the way out there. So, are any BFers going to ride this together? If so, then it would make it worth doing and I might be tempted to drive out there all by myself.

Sea to Summit is 87 miles with 12,000 feet of climbing! I may not ride it and, instead, offer to drive Bob to the start and pick him up when it's done (since it's an out and back and the logistics for getting there and back are tough). As much as I would love to be able to do it, based on my climbing of late, I don't think I have the climbing legs for that type of ride. :(

FYI...On line registration closes on May 5th (for those of you who haven't signed up yet!)

Sounds like a great ride! Shouldn't be that much of a stretch for those that did the Tour de Santa Barbara. If I were in town, I'd do it, but that is the weekend I am on-call up, so I'll be stuck here in the Bay Area spending indoors while everyone is basting outside.
My May century will be this weekend, Grizzly Peak Century, 109 miles, 8500 feet climbing  I'm just killing myself!
