View Full Version : 2006 Cycling Statistics
I was just checking my journal for 2006. I rode to work every day until December 18, when my knee blew due to arthritis. I rode my bike on 298 days of the year, missing four days a month while travelling as well as my sick days. I rode just under 5,000 miles in the year. (One bike I rode had no computer so I don't know exact miles.) I averaged 83 minutes a day with cycling and all other exercise.
The main thing I realized is that if I owned a car, I would probably get less than half the exercise I do now. In our busy modern world, the best plan for most people is to incorporate exercise into their daily lives. I figure about 1/3 of my cycling was recreational and 2/3 was utility or transportation riding. (Of course, in a way it was all recreational :))
Did anybody else keep records, or can you estimate some figures for cycling and exercise for 2006?
353 days riding
13k+ miles
6000+ singlespeed road, about 120 mtb singlespeed on trails, rest fixed gear road, 1 test ride on geared road
just under $4/mile net income
I bought a used bike on June 22, 2006 because I was sick of bussing to work (I took the bus for a month and a half before buying the bicycle). July was my transition month, where I combined riding the bike and the bus. In August I started cycling every day. From August to December I had 93 commuting days (out of a possible 100 - I lost a few days due to being sick or being out of town) with a distance cycled of approximately 2750 km by December 22 (last day of work before December Shutdown). Without the bike I would have spent a lot of time waiting for and sitting on the bus. Pretty much all of that cycling was for transportation.

I think it's cool that you ride all day professionally, and then you MTB on your day off. do your legs keep going around in circles in your dreams?
I have odometers on two of the three bikes that I ride regularly (I don't have one on the ice bike). I clocked 2000+ km on the Toronto urban commuter, 1500 km on the Calgary hybrid, and estimate that I've put on about 600 km (40 15k commutes since the beginning of november + utility riding) on the Calgary ice bike, for a total of just over 4000 km.
It would be interesting to repost this in a year to see what's happened since...

actually the mtb riding was done during the week after work, and my legs usually sleep the sleep of the dead just like the rest of me...........I will admit though that its not uncommon for walking to be a bit uncomfortable at times
I rode every workday, except for times when I had to drive one of the cars to the airport for a trip. I think there were about 5 days like that. All my riding is utility or transportation. There's four weeks of vacation during which I don't ride. Even so, I estimate about 2,500 miles, about 600 of them pulling a Trail-A-Bike. I agree with Roody about incorporation of exercise into one's daily life. If I didn't have a bike, I would get no exercise.

Didn't keep track last year, but estimate around 4000 miles w/rec and com mileage. Started keeping track this Sunday and am at 120+ for the week so far. Set my goal to avg 150-200 mpwk this year. Reasonable and attainable. Have cut auto mileage by 1/3 over the last year. Avg less than 30.00 per month for gas. Setting a goal of under 5000 for my truck and over 7500 for the bike.
I started a mileage log in April. 4085 miles by bike. About 60% transportation / 40% pure recreation. I'm really into the bike commuting. I keep thinking of the commuter guy who signs his posts "Work: an 8-hour break between bike rides."

I think it's a great idea for carlite people to set a maximum goal for car usage. I would set a realistic goal, then subtract 10 % to keep it challenging.
not really sure
I average 13 miles a day soon to change
Well looking at my college schedule.
I was off for 10 weeks, work 5 days, had 10 vacation days off.
10*2+10-365 = 335
Assuming I did not ride any where on my weekend off not likely I need to do things. Especially when I took a 8 day weekends/vacation which featured riding in Tucson druing one semestor break. 335 Of course we need to factor that I might have ridden

I reached 4000 miles between June 1st (When I got my computer, about a week after I started riding again) and the 2nd of December when I tore the sensor off the bike in an accident. Calculating based on the known distances I rode, I made almost 500 miles in December on commutes, plus shopping trips and such, so I'll put my total for the year at 4,500. :) Not bad for recovering from a knee injury.
172 days, or 1720 miles of basic commuting from home to work, probably another couple of hundred of miles of side errands and inter-office commuting, and I will guess at another 500 of weekend recreational and utility riding. So approaching 2500 miles, or almost 4000 km.
It's not nearly as impressive as some of your records, but it's a personal best, and since I took public transit to work pretty much all the days I didn't ride, and didn't take the car once, I'm feeling virtuous.
We have some real road warriors in this forum! The 2 classes of cyclists that seem to put in the most miles are the road racers/club riders and the carfree/carlite commuters.

HERE'S the thread I was looking for!
6620 miles, 365 days, commuting, for pleasure, and a couple short tours.
I am smitten with disbelief at pedex's stats. Pedex, if you are willing to accept it, I would gladly pay tribute to you for your incomprehensible amazingness.

Be careful or his head will swell so big he won't be able to get his messenger bag on. :) What I find amazing about pedex is not the miles he puts in, because lots of messengers do that. i think it's amazing that after he gets off work, he rides all over town to the store and the movies, or goes mountain biking in his time off.
and of course 6620 miles is nothing to sneeze at, Zalafan. Good riding!
dont worry, my head is already swollen :) its a full time job keeping my ego in check
one feeds the other really, once youve been slinging packages for awhile its really nothing at all to just carry that over into the rest of your life, shopping is no different than hauling packages
I love riding most of the time, especially fixed gear, so the miles come easily. To me there arent many things better than muscling a track bike around on the street or watching someone else ride one that knows what they are doing. Poetry in motion to me.
