Bicycle Mechanics - Replaced Ultegra 9-spd. STI with D-A 7700 STI; drivetrain now skips.

I wore out the Ultegra STI shifters on a road bike built up with Ultegra 9-speed. So I bought a brand new pair of Dura Ace 7700 9-speed STI levers cheap from ICYCLES. I installed them on the bike the same way I've installed several Ultegra levers over the years. I kept the Ultegra derailers.

Adjusting the rear shifting was hard. I've never had trouble doing it before. I've got it working, but the shift from the 3rd to 4th cog is still hard. The 3rd and 4th cog are also skipping under hard pedaling.

I replaced the chain and the cassette (both with SRAM parts) and the situation is no better.

What am I doing wrong? Is an Ultegra 6500 rear derailer incompatible with DA 7700 shifters?

TIA.

No, they work the same. Did you put in new cables or re-use old ones?

The shifters aren't going to make the chain skip. Suggest you go to the Park Tool website and find the instructions for adjusting derailleurs. Do each and every step in sequence. New cables and housings are included with new shifters, did you use them?

Thanks, guys. Good advice. I used new cable and housings. The Park Tool instructions are better than my technique (I just eyeball the pulley's lineup with the inner and outter cogs when setting the limit screws), so I'll give that a try and see if it fixes the shifting.

The "worn out" Ultegra shifters were probably a cable problem in the first place.

Any excuse for an upgrade!

Nah, after twelve years of heavy use, the left side stopped tensioning cable alltogether. Not that I'm complaining, after twelve years.

Al1943, you rule! Park's directions were better than my technique and it took care of the problem. Thanks.
