do you have to have a chain tool? or is there another way to remove/install a chain?

Depends on the chain.

If you have a SRAM chain which has a "power link," you can just pop it apart withoug a tool although you will need a tool to size a new chain.

Most other brands of chains will require a chain tool to break the chain.

If you are going to do real mountain biking, I recommend taking a chain tool with you on every ride. Broken chains is one of the most common mountain biking on-the-trail mechanical problems.

Ill attest to what spoke wrench, I have broken power links, twice both on the same hill, both times with a bad shift!!

ok, so i have a walmart bike (roadmaster mt. fury) :( - will a stock chain on a wally world bike need a tool?

Most likely, yes. You can get chain breakers for a few bucks at your LBS.

Yes. You will need 2 tools: A hacksaw, and a slegehammer.
