I just got a paramount that I want to turn into a fixed gear. I am debating which route to go with the brake/wheel size. I would need a 65mm reach brake or would it be better to go with a 27" wheel? I only use a front brake on my current fixie. Anyone have an opinion and what size reach would I need with a 27" wheel? Thanks

If you measured against a 700C rim (622mm) and need 65mm reach, then you'll need 4mm less for a 27" (630mm) or 59mm which is still about 2mm longer than most "long reach" calipers. So if it were me, I'd get one of the "extra long" calipers like the new Tektro or the Promax and stick with 700C rims, cause I'd want more in the way of tire selection...that's just me...

The difference in rim radius is basically 4mm. Since you are going fixed, and I do not know the cranks and or pedal type being used... do consider the BB height with the smaller wheels. May not be a problem... do remember the difference in outside diameter of 27" to 700c is more than 4mm...

Tektro R556's should work. I'm going through the same trip myself. Except that the R556's are too long for the back and all other brakes are too short for the front.

Obviously your Paramount is a P-10/15 tourer if you have those issues (Do you really want to make a tourer fixie?) If you want Campy Nuovo Record brakes then you only need 1 drop-bolt for the rear. A Campy Nuovo long-reach (standard reach 1970's) ) front caliper WILL reach a 27" rim in the front...but just barely. Drop-bolts show up from time to time on eBay...but are rare. I sold a NOS Campy one on eBay for $60!

A lot of fixies only use a front brake anyway....so in that case you don't need to do anything but get the right caliper and use 27's (which are the proper wheel for 70's Paramount tourers). You could also use virtually any centerpull brakes...as they generally have very long reach.
