Mountain Biking - Mountain Bike by THE NORTH FACE?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm about to buy my first real mountain bike. I decided to get the Giant Iguana Disc. Then I happened to go by Galyans and see several bikes with THE NORTH FACE logo on them. The sales clerk showed me one that had better drivetrain components (Deore/LX), shifters, disc brakes (Avid Mech.), and fork (RockShox Pilot XC) than the Iguana Disc for only $100 more. He also told me that there is a life-time warranty on the frame.
While I'd prefer to use a LBS for service, this Galyans is 5 minutes from my house (LBS is 20-30 minutes) and will give my life-time service (adjustments) on the bike for free.
Has anyone ever heard of these bikes? I think the frame may be an Iron Horse. Any reason I should get the Iguana Disc over the NORTH FACE bike?
HELP!! The weather is great and I'd love to be on the trails this weekend!
Thanks!

I've never heard of the bike before. I can't find any reference online either. I even went to the Gaylans website and they don't mention the bike. It seems like a dept store bike so I wouldn't go for it. Its easy to build a crap frame and put better components on it. The components are more visible and make the bike look good while weak alum or steel is impossible to detect until the frame it broken in two.
If it is a frame purchased from ironhorse with a different sticker on it that would be cool. Ironhorse make excellent frames and are the best value bikes this year imo. I also don't know of any iron horse bike called NORTH FACE so I can't give a great opinion on it.
I'm unable to find anything about a north face bike either. North Face makes apparel, extreme weather type stuff. The components make it sound like a pretty good deal. You should probably inquire about the nature of the frame. Many companies (a lot of car companies) will have some of the larger bike manufacturers make a bike for them. This could be a something like that. Its certainly something worth looking into.

You Canadians... :p An Ironhorse wouldn't know what to do with all the heat here. They've been corrupted by your thin Canadian air!

Yeah, I was pretty frustrated by looking on the internet also. According to the sales clerk. This is the first year that THE NORTH FACE is producing this line of bikes. Galyans is the only distributor. I get a little bit of a funny feeling buying a bike that has no specs that I can really compare to the more well known names at my LBS.
BTW, I may not have been totally clear in my original post. This is a NORTH FACE bike called the Denali (they have an entire line). And it is the same NORTH FACE that makes all the cool outdoor stuff (sleeping bags, tents, clothes, etc). The bike looks really cool, but I don't want a cool looking bike that can't hold its own on the trails.
Thanks for the efforts. I'll grill the guy at Galyans about the nature of the frame and get the specifics of the warranty. I'll post what I find out. If I end up buying it I'll try to post some pics.
Thanks again.

In that case...no I wouldn't do it. 1st year of production is just bad news :)...no matter who it is.

I think not, not at least in this case! I purchased the $500 model (Pumori) and had have no problems or concerns - the bike rides great! The discs arent bad (Hayes) and the component set is comparable to more expensive bikes.
I've gotten at least 35 miles on the frame and haven't heard or seen anything unusual - no problems there!
I think these bikes could really move into the market if they just got a little publicity - a great value on good components.

Beware there has been some rumblings about north face having finacial troubles so be wary of the life time coverage offered on th eframe
North Face bikes are rebadged Iron Horse Bikes.

i am a bike tech at Galyans. North Face Bikes are made by Ironhorse. The only thing North Face about those bikes is the paint job. A heads up....Galyans just got bought by DICK's sporting goods, and Dicks doesn't carry NF bikes, so they are currently be LIQUIDATED at ridiculous prices. One lucky custome just picked up a $2400 dual suspension bike for $315. the brakes and levers alone are worth more than that.

The thread has been done with for a year and a half, I think we got it.
Awesome bargain.
And nothing;s wrong with starting with a search before posting :) In fact, most forums encourage that... I have accidentally revived long forgotten threads that way myself.
I Bought 2 of these Northface Pumori Mountain bikes. How could you go wrong? Iron Horse frames, Deore shifters, wtb rims and tires, MZ comp fork and Disk brakes. The best part Paid $200 for each bike! They Retail for $800. Dicks just doesn't want to carry Gaylans stuff. Bought a silver one and a black one! would have bought another but I got the last two! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I own a 2004 Gaint Rainer, and a 2003 Motobecane 700ht and I like the Northface bikes better!

Heh.. I was just about to bump this thread from the graveyard, but somebody beat me to it.
I was in Dick's(formerly Galyan's) looking at these bikes this afternoon. The Denali has a pretty sick list of components. It's marked at $500 right now, but they are still in the process of converting my local store over to Dick's. I'm still a couple weeks away from buying, so I'll be watching these closely. They had a ton of the Pumori bikes, but nothing over a 15.5" frame.
I went to a LBS to check out Ironhorse and rode a Warrior Comp and Giant Ranier. The Ironhorse is the most comfortable bike I have ridden so far, and I've ridden Spec Hardrock, Jamis Durango, GF Marlin and then Ranier and Warrior today. I hope they start slashing prices on these bikes.
The North FACE Denali is a great bike, I would have bought one, but they sold out fast! I have been going back to Dicks every other day hoping someone returns one. I am very impressed with these bikes.

I purchased a pumori and I am a 250 lbs guy. I pound the crap out of this bike. I have about 200 miles into it and the brakes are great, the suspension is awesome, just with it got a little stiffer. I was sceptical of buying a bike from Dick's, but it is paying off. I prefer this bike to my TREk 4500 anyday!

i have just bought a yellow/green northface pumori. Its great! my understanding is they are made by ironhorse but have different components. They are also cheaper, much cheaper. I love this bike and recommend it to anyone who enjoys soft and hard trail riding. its great. After reading this thread i had decided that the pumori was the bike for me; Great frame, 100 ml. of give in front shocks, disc brakes, and a set of low grade race shifters, and all for under $500. They are sold at Dicks sporting goods and are from the old Galyans stock. I think they are trying to get rid of them so get them while their hot, and cheap. Im sure these bikes will be a huge expensive buy in just a few years.

I have the Yavapai, it's served me well in a Dirt Crit race series and in an Adventure Race. I would suggest getting it if this is your first purchase. You should feel out the sport before buying something super high end.
Beware as most people on this forum, LBS techs, hate The North Face bikes and they will say the Bike sucks. Oh, actually they say they wouldn't go with it because "it's not tight enough for them."
Whatever...
