I am reconditioning an eBay 1971 Raleigh Twenty folding bike that has a bracket for a kickstand but came without one. Also have an eBay Schwinn kickstand that looks about right. I know there is a special tool to compress and install frame kickstands but I don't have one. What is the home mechanic method to compress the spring and install this kickstand?

...and if anyone's parting with a couple of these tools, put one aside for me too, I need one for a restored Schwinn I'm doing some delicate repair on.

If we're talking about the built-in Schwinn kickstand, I used this site to show me how to remove the stand on my Varsity.

I didn't have big enough channel locks so I used a c-clamp to press in the ring. I took a finishing nail and bent it in a circle with some needle-nosed pliers and used that to press the ring in. This let me remove the pin with no problem at all. It was really easy and I have to imagine that you could just reverse the procedure to install one.

+2 I did the same on my Varsity and Super Sport. Piece of cake.
