Motionbased has some adjustment functionality (called MBGravity), I don't know what it's based on or how it functions. They recommend using the garmin settings if you have the Edge device.

You need to see what kind of smoothing value's you are using in each program.

See http://sporttracks.zonefivesoftware.com/Discussion/viewtopic.php?t=1240

and

http://sporttracks.zonefivesoftware.com/Discussion/viewtopic.php?t=1040&highlight=ascent

for more info.

Each program looks at the data and does it's own thing. For example (and this is user setable), Sport Tracks sees acents as +2% or more, decents as -2% or more and flat as -2 to +2%.

The smoothing is a bit high on Sport Tracks stock. I use the value of 6 . See the links for a little more advice and detail.

If you tweak the settings you can almsot match Training Centers info.

awiner,

I've loaded up my last 10 or so rides into this thing, the ones that were still in the garmin :-), this thing is pretty sweet! I've got a few questions. I'll poke around a bit and see if I can figure them out or get several together for you. Thanks!

Ok, downloaded SportTracks - It looks better than Motionbased. MotionBased is a temperamental thing. I realize last night they were having errors but even this morning, it is a little flaky. The maps and summary information is easily accessible in SportTracks. One thing that does take getting used to is the non-Windows standard navigation. Since the only GUI I have used is Windows, I do not recognize the windowing protocol used, is it Mac, Motiv, ??? Anyway, it is not hard to get what you need. Thanks awiner

I exported the ride into Google Earth and that is quite cool. It is a kick playing it back although I wish I could slow it down. But the experience is awesome. Thanks Scootcore.

I am very close to quitting my job and dedicating my life to cycling in the daytime and then spend the night (over)analyzing the ride. My wife has already been instructed to leave me alone unless she is bringing food.

To play it slow: go to Tools|Options|Touring and you can fine tune the replay to your satisfaction :)

Ok, so I played with Sporttracks a bunch yesterday, and seem to have it going well. It may have been the gui which threw me in the first place, not windows intuitive at all.

About the only thing I'd like to add is the ability to create custom calculated stats. For instance, one of my favorite calcs is to calculate the ratio of elevation gain divided by 100 against miles ridden. So, a 40 mile ride with 3000 feet of climbing would go (3000/100)/40 = .75. I've got a pretty good feel for how hilly a ride was or will be by looking at that number.

No software has this calc or this custom calculation capability, but it'd be nice. I'll go throw him a donation and put in the request.

Incidentally, this is also why I don't care about inaccurate elevation gain measurments within reason. I tend to group rides into groups based on this ratio.

The bloat ride was right around 1, a mountainous ride. River trails are under .5, basically flat. My average ratio has been around .67 (mixed terrain). So to me, there's essentially no difference between a 4900 ft day and a 4300 ft day.

Ok, I have a stupid question, can you delete all the history from the device using one of these PC programs? I hate navigating on the device itself. BTW, I have a Forerunner, not the ultra cool Edge's others have.

Maybe it'd be best if one could just export the summary measures to Excel. I'd donate for that...

That one was supposed to be released last year, don't know if it's there and hidden or if it just didn't happen.

So, how are you guys liking Sport Tacks ?

It's much better than training center, the maps, ride details and graphing are better.

Motion based has the fun bling functions like ride comparisons, dot racing etc. It also puts my rides online and lets me share them with people, and download summaries to excel etc.

On the other hand, motionbased terribly weak on actual ride analysis. The analyzer is 100% WORTHLESS on on long rides when it cuts rides down to 5 mile segments, no matter how you used the lap function on the gps device. That's utterly ********. I made laps for a reason.

Sporttracks is just about the opposite. I can cut ride down to 1/4 mile segments for very detailed analysis. But, there's no ability to compare rides or export summary data to excel (csv).

So, I still upload the data files to training center because it can export. I upload the ride to motionbased for the bling/fun factor. I upload it to sporttracks to figure out how much that big ol' hill actually hurt me.

@#$@#$#@

I kind of agree with ronjon, I have been using them both.

My biggest gripe with Sport Tracks is the non-Window paradigm. There is a reason Windows programs behave the same, the similarity makes it easy to jump from application to application. In Sport Tracks, you really have to hunt for stuff. But, on the good side, the splits, pace, elevation (etc) analysis is fantastic. (I love how it plots a split on the map). My son is also using this for his running and it is quite helpful there too. The one thing I would like is to compare two rides (or runs). I think ronjon mentioned this as well.

All in all, thanks for directing me to it. It has been helpful.

Great software (excellent price ;) ), horrible interface like others have noted. The idea of charging that much for motionbased is ridiculous, BTW when there's free software that duplicates most functions.

Still looking for a way to export summary ride data to Excel. The only way I found is to copy the motionbased summary directly from the webpage (fields and and order can be customized)

Motionbased has an export function (it may be require a paid subscription). There's a box called General Table Options on the lower left hand side of the My Activities screen which has export to csv or xml.

Yeah, that's wayyy more than I need or I can handle :) That function exports the whole dataset (all the little GPS points...). What I really need for my Excel log are the basics: how fast, how long, etc. Every product (from MotionBased to Training Center) basically wants to be your ONLY loggging tool, but I still like to keep all in Excel, where I keep track for instance of my commuting miles, and other stuff.
