Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Another amazing achievment.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Not by me of course but by Ken Bonner

It is inspiring to readand while my mouth is shut as I read, my inner self has its jaw on the ground. Thank you for sharing Kens comments. Way to go Ken, what an achievement.

Ken is a god. He's absolutley my cycling hero and role model. Especially because he's 30 years older than I am and is doing what he's doing, and with such style and grace.
Does he have a life outside of cycling?
Does he have a life outside of cycling?
He does. Running. And he is retired. And he has a wife, a lovely lady, who supports him (but refuses to do night-time support, so Ken stays at motels about half-way on 1200 randonnees). They get around a bit, so you might throw travelling in there as another life outside cycling.
The thing is about Ken that you wouldn't pick him as a super-athlete at the start of a randonnee. He's got more reflective gear and gadgets on his bike than you can poke a stick at, and he is as friendly as approachable as anyone could be. The bike doesn't look like anything to write home about... a Ti frame that always seems well-ridden and... well, grubby.
But the split calf muscle are a giveaway to this man's physical abilities. Let alone the speed he gets along at. And the fact that you have miles to go to the turnaround point, and there is Ken, already on the way back, with a big smile and wave as he goes past.
Truly, a remarkable human being... and as Octopus says, a hero to just about everyone who meets him.
Somwhere I read (BF?) he did a 1200k (or 600k) and at the halfway point got off the bike, was driven a short distance and ran a half marathon, qas driven back, and finished with plenty of time to spare.
Seems like a great guy from all I've read about him. I've got a long long way to go in the UMCA year rounder to hit that kind of mileage!!! WOW!
:)  whoa! well-done!! ken rode 5 times what i rode. :)
I'll just add that Ken is a great guy ... very friendly, and not at all condescending to those of us who are not as fast or fit as he is. He and I have met and talked on a number of 1200K randonnees and a fleche. We also exchange emails now and then, and I'm toying with the idea of doing a series of brevets he is putting on this spring. :)
As Rowan says, he also has a lovely wife who supports him on his rides, and he travels a lot.
bmike, yes I believe he has done exactly what you mentioned. Rowan and I were talking to him about that before the Last Chance Randonnee in Sept 2005.
