Are kids REALLY this stupid these days?

Just saw a story about this on the news. Leave the car in gear and get out and run along side or climb up on the roof while the car drives itself. WTF??

You never heard of ghost riding the whip?

Get with the program.

That's how we do in oaktown.

We always used to ghost ride our 50 lb iron I-beam bmx bikes off the loading docks. So much fun :D

What I want to know is this commercial I saw about kids sticking leeches on themselves a real phenomenon?

http://www.abovetheinfluence.com/the-ads/default.aspx

It totally threw me when I saw it a few weeks back. Is this just clever advertising to show how influenced kids can be to do other things because it's popular (drugs, etc), or are kids really doing this?

Weird in either case.

[edit... never mind... apparently it's just allegory (http://www.abovetheinfluence.com/the-ads/slom.htm). dang, i am gullible :o ]

No that was just a commercial showing how kids are influenced to do stupid things.

There was a "CSI: Miami" episode which featured this so it must be popular. BTW, it's not just kids who are stupid, people are stupid. Kids are just as stupid but with less experience.

I blame it on Iccarus. Strapping on wings and thinking he could fly close to the sun. What an idiot!

Dedalus at least had some common sense!

From what I know, this ghost riding originated in oakland. They talk about it in some e40 songs.

People get out of the car and either stand on the ledge of the door or run after the car. No idea why. We've actually done it before, trying to imitate and get dumb like oakland folk.

This is most likely the reason the A's will be moving to Fremont.

Don't worry, Pheard. Kids are just as crazy where ever you grow up. Some just know how to capitalize on it, while others just know how to immitate the ones who found a way to make a buck.

And if E40 sings about it, it must be true.

I imitated it because it's so damn stupid.

It is pretty much pointless. Hopefully it dies out.

Bah. I was "surfing" to the Beach Boys on the roof of the car better than 20 years ago. My Plymouth would hold a straight line and exactly 25 MPH at idle in third gear. Now, given that E40 is apparently 17 days older than me. it could be concurrent origination on opposite coasts. I never saw anyone else do it, or eat a turkey sandwich while on the hood at a minimum speed of 70 MPH. The car was being driven at that point, obviously.

Somehow we lived.

There was a video making the rounds on the internet a few years back of a kid who was driving a large pickup, climbed out the window and sat on the roof of the cab as the truck rolled along a residential street. The filmer was in a vehicle leading the truck. Of course, the video ended badly. Pickup drifts to the right, kid jumps off just before the truck hits a tree. Turns out it was done about 10 miles from where I'm typing.

Never did it. I'd put my life in my own hands, which was probably stupid, and in the hands of someone I knew, which was probably more stupid, but not in the hands of someone I didn't know.

In Oaktown they do it a little braver. They lock the steering wheel to the left or right and lock down the accelerator just as they do when they are doing doughnuts. Then they get on the car.

One guy got thrown and fell under the car. Since the steering wheel was locked in one direction, it kept running him over and over. The car was finally stopped when someone jumped in it and put on the brakes. The guy will still underneath while the cars tires were burning out so fast, the tires were smoking.

I wonder how many times it ran over him before someone decided it wasn't such a good idea? I mean, the first 2 or 3 times is pretty funny, but then the guy stops flopping around and it gets to be a bummer.

Can't be too sure. Darwinism only really works if the subject hasn't yet reproduced.

Right. But, it still works because it's preventing the subject from reproducing more.

No, the subject has not adapted to realize that such a stunt is deadly moronic. Other subjects learn from this stunt and either repeat it, or choose to make better choices for survival in the future.

(quite a condensed and non-academic take on Darwin, but it's Oakland for goodness sakes.... ;) )

I think you're working on the larger scale of Social Darwinism. I'm more on the "people are just vehicles for DNA" side of things.

I think that brings in an entire new level of Darwinism, and it has nothing to do with "ghost riding the whip". After having watched it, I'm too stupid to procreate. I hope it's temporary...

Yeah, but all that Oaktown cred is totally ruined because MC Hammer is from there....

...but salvaged because Digital Underground also came from there.

I think Gertrude Stein put it sucinctly when she stated: "The trouble with Oakland is that when you get there, there isn't any there there."

I think I saw a VHS video of that one... (and it was set in Oakland) It was a collection of things like that. including one where this guy knocked out another guy and then kicked him in the nads while the guy was unconscious. OUCH!
