Foo - Wife is bummed & a little scared

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My wifes company said right before Christmas that there would be layoffs in March. Well, they started a bit early. They basically have two buildings here. One is admin type functions and the other is IT functions. My wife is in the admin side. They both have (had) about 600 people. Today they let about 90 people go in IT and closed out an additional 30 or so vacant positions. So 120 total positions. They say they're done for now but who knows. Our health insurance is through there, and cheap, so her losing her job would be a biggie.

Did the same thing at my company little over a year ago. It sucked......probably as much for those of us who stayed as those who didn't. We had to see friends being escorted off and worry about a new job, then pick up the slack from their loss.
I don't know what to say.....good luck to you and your wife.
Yes it sucks and I'm very sorry I really hope for the best for you both!!!

sucks that the job is tied into your health care benefits. that makes it even more stressful.
i've been wanting to leave my job as well, but i don't want to only because i have good health coverage. plus, with all the bike riding i do, i'd be SOL if i got hit and had to go to the hospital. so, i gotta stay at my crappy job for the time being.
We have such a strange way of doing health care here. Not only do you have to worry about your job in this uncertain economy, but your health as well.
I was at a dot.com almost 6 years ago and before they were bought out upper management said there will be fitment for everyone. After the buyout over half the company got laid off or, in my bosses case, she was offered her position at a huge paycut. She declined.
What sucked even more was that we were expecting our first child in 4 mos. It took about 3 mos to find a decent job and luckily I still kept in touch with my old boss and ended up working for him. But I had to move from San Francisco to Dallas. But when family is involved you gotta go where the $$ is.
Plus housing is a lot cheaper in Dallas compared to SF! Although I just moved back a few months ago... again for a job! :)
Good luck!
Make sure to tell her not to worry. Not a damn thing she can do about it anway, other than possibly start job hunting now instead of later. If she's that concerned it might be time to dust off the resume.

Just remember that for every door that closes, another opens. Have faith that things will work out and leave you happier, healthier and in better shape than you were before. ;)
Best wishes, you are certainly not alone.
Consider this professional advice from a mechanical engineer, encrypt the **** out of everything, she can't be fired then.
