This is what I posted in my blog, just thought I'd post it here... please feel free to comment or explain the benefits of lycra. :)

I woke up at 10, had a breakfast consisting of three candy bars, two cups of water, two pieces of bread, and a handful of venison jerky.

A bit later, I biked to Geneseo and back.

Mapquest says it's 22.67 miles each way, or about 45 miles round trip. Not an easy ride, especially for someone who is just starting their riding season. My legs were killin' afterwards. Al recommended massaging them, which I did, while taking a nice hot shower. Ah, no more pain.

It was a rough ride. At about the time I got to Avon on the return trip, my left quad was starting to get sore. Although I didn't sprint them, the three hills on the way back weren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. On the way there, I stopped in Avon to buy another bottle of Gatorade. That was my only stop; the last 35 miles or so were non-stop. Didn't put my feet down once after that, till I was back at the apartment.

East River road seems to be popular for bikers, I passed a ton of them, mostly people biking alone on nice road bikes, wearing lycra. (sp?) Everyone always waves, and of course I return the wave. I feel like an idiot, but I'm not sure what the point of lycra is. Today I wore a t-shirt, with a sweatshirt over it, and nylon shorts, and was very comfortable. Everyone else I saw, of course, was wearing lycra. Seems to me like it'd be a bit chilly.

Wonder what my legs will feel like tomorrow... heh.

Their's pretty much three main reasons for lycra.

1. The obvious: it's tight so it' not flapping in the wind or riding up as you pedal.

2. The Pad: All real lycra cycling shorts have a chamois pad in the crotch area. This just makes it a bit more comfortable to have the extra bit of padding underneath you and most chamois are designed to wick sweat away from the body

3. Chafing: Since everything is kept in tight, it keeps the clothing from chafing your body parts, and your body parts from chafing your other body parts. This is not too terribly important for short rides, but without them on long rides, you will be sorry. (note: For the shorts to reduce the chance of chafing, you must go commando.)

So thats pretty much it, and as for the cold, you can buy full length lycra tights (worn over a regular lycra biking short) or leg warmers.
