View Full Version : Crank puller

I want to paint my sprocket but I don't have a crank puller and I can't get my drive side arm off. Anything I can use that will work? I tried tapping it with a hammer, no luck.

Kick it (with a shoe on). Worked for me, just keep kicking it and it will come off

I have never, ever gotten a crank puller to work properly. Luckily, the magic of grease usually makes them slide off fairly easily.

My crank puller only works for my Mountianbike.
I would just spray some lube down there and keep at the kicking.

I always grease the spindle, but they havent been taken off since the shop put them on so I guess they didn't. Oh well I guess kicking will have to do.
Thread your crank bolt all of the way in and back it off a turn. Tap the bolt with a hammer to get the cranks moving (these are 3-piece BMX cranks right?). Do that a couple of times (maximum 3 turns) then tap the back of the crank arm with a rubber mallet or gently with a hammer. You can always try the other arm. Make sure you grease up everything real well when putting them back together.

i wouldnt hit the bolt in fear of stipping it. i have never had to do it but i would just hit the crap outta it with a rubber mallet
You can always take it to a shop and bribe the dude at the counter with coffee.

Yeah, alcohol does the trick in most cases.

My shop would take it off for free, but I'm to lazy to go there. And I don't have a rubber mallet. Whatever I'll get it off somehow.

Not much of a beer fan. I like whiskey. Also I'm not really lazy, I've just misplaced my allen wrench for my cranks and after looking for it for a few hours I have given up.

You don't need to drink more. Save the money and the aggrivation and just buy bike parts with the money you might have spent on alcohol.

It's still a waste of money.

I can't stand my bike without a chain... it takes forever to get anywhere and I bash my legs on my stem.

Whats a waste of money?
If he has the cash, and wants to do it it isnt a waste. Hell, I have a BMX with a freecoaster for ****s and kicks that I built with some spare parts. Although I still had to go out and buy some parts, it wasnt a waste.

Eh, to me I think alcohol is a complete waste. It's a chemical that you put in your body and it's a horrible thing that just completely impairs yourself. It's stupid and you can definitely have fun without it. That is my 2 cents.

Say that after you get drunk for the first time. I used to be the same way.

Depending on how long after he got drunk it was, he probably would say it... if he woke up with a hangover for instance.
I don't have anything against alchohol/drugs, but I just don't use them right now. I don't have much self discipline, so I would get addicted to anything, and at this point that would be a terrible idea..
pound it with a rubber mallet. surefire.

Well I got my sprocket off. I just took the left arm off and took it off like it was a 2 piece crank. I painted the sprocket white and it looks so dope, I'll post pics soon.

It's a chemical that you put in your body.
What about all the other chemicals you're subjecting your body to? What about all the growth hormones in the beef or chicken you eat, especially if you eat fast food? Do you partake in the consumption of any Soda Beverage? There are plenty of chemicals in them to mess with your body. Most fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides, some of which get into the ground for the plant to absorb. What are THEY doing to your body?
Yep, alcohol can be bad, but there are many more worse chemicals that people put into their bodies...and I like my PBR's, High Life's, Premium's & Black Label's.

PBR's
For some reason i like that word and like if i ever buy beer when i'm 21 i wanna get PBR just because it's got a cool name. And it makes me feel like a redneck. Don't ask. PBR!

Rubber mallet or hammer and a block of wood.
You probably need some oil as well to get into the arm/spindle interface to get it loose.
GREASE it when you put them back on.
Good luck.

I already did it... The right side arm is basicaaly stuck on there for good unless I use some kind of machine to separate it from the spindle. I don't mind though, it's not hard to just take off the left arm and pull it out like a 2 pc crank. And obviously grease is a must... everyone already knows that.

So you don't have pesticides on your food? And you don't have any growth horomones? Why add more bad stuff to your system?
