General Cycling Discussion - what are your favorite sports?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

other than cycling, what are your favorite sports? also, do you actually compete in them or just enjoy spectating? are there any sports you don't like?
personally, i've always been a soccer player and a bicycle rider. during the past few years soccer has taken a backseat to bicycling, however. i also like to snowboard during the winter.
i do not understand people who never actually play the sport they are into, but think they are experts from watching them on t.v. also, i do not understand sports that require very little exercise or endurance, such as baseball.
what i am guessing is that most b.f. members are also interested in sports that require a lot of endurance, and that a lot of you actually participate in another sport at some level. i was also curious to see if sports that require strong legs are more popular with cyclists.

I personally find Rock Climbing, be it sport or bouldering, very enjoyable and it definately works your arms, some legs, and your mind. I also like to kayak, which i just recently got it, lots of torso strength and when you get a great workout. Nothing like running over huge holes and wave trains and getting soaked in the process. It takes skill as well and you can take the sport as far as you want, from simple class 2 whitewater to class "6" 20ft waterfalls. Of course most of that is summer sports. For winter i like to ski, go snowshoeing, etc... Of course mountain biking is still my favorite.

Football, basketball to play. I don't seem to have time to play these anymore. Football I competed in highschool till I left and basketball I was a 3on3 tourny player. I wanted the money with less rules.
Dh, ds, dj and street to watch and play.
Weightlifting has been a staple of mine for 10 years now.
I can't watch sports I don't play...
Otherwise I don't have much time for anything else :D I can say this much I have always hated sports requiring endurace as the primary fitness trait. I found them dull and slow (no offence to anyone). Football and basketball while requiring endurance used my strengths to my advantage. My height and powerful legs and strong upper body were always my primary resources in sport. It directly moves into my prefered styles of cycling as well.
I play no winter sports. I never have...but hopefully this winter will try snowboarding but I really hate the winter and prefer a good set of weights and a warm house instead of freezing while falling in the snow. Uggg...
And no..I don't like hockey (anymore)...it has become a game for wimps compared to old school. Too open and not enough driving the guy into the ice...

I will always be a runner first. Im also a triathlete, well, Ive done one triathlon and planning on plenty more! So Im a little into swimming. I also weightlift. I ran track in high school so I still follow that. I dont care to watch any team sports like soccer, baseball, etc. Im more of a fan of an individula having to tough it out. Im going to school in arizona so winter sports still means swimming, cycling, and running!! I do go home to VA for winter break and nothing beats running in the snow.

pretty much all sports, rock climbing, basketball, I live in the gorge where probably 75% of the population is doing some kind of sport. I don't really see the point in watching sports I'd rather play it... "curling" on the other hand I don't see the point in playing or watching.:D

I run - sadly not as much I used to. Been a (Field) Hockey Keeper, moved into umpiring the sport.
I enjoy watching Rugby at all levels, when in the States Basketball, Ice Hockey and College Football.
I hate Baseball

Winter sports: Ice Hockey and ball hockey - biking is great for keeping the legs in shape for hockey - I hadn't played ice hockey for 3 years due to being on blood thinner due a blood clot - After the doc told me I could stop taking the rat poison, I played in an ice hockey tournament (3 games in 2 days) and was surprised that my legs weren't a bit stiff or sore! Before I became a regular cyclist, the first hockey game of the season resulted in barely being able to move for a day or two.
Spring/Summer/Fall sports: Canoeing and kayaking give the upper body some work that biking doesn't provide. I'm mostly a lake paddler, but plan to do more river paddling this year.

cycling/mountain biking is my #1 sport. i also do lots of ski touring, snowboarding, alpine skiing, mountain climbing.
in college and until recently i was a big volleyball player, but i have only played competitively 1 season in the last 4 years (last year and then my team fell apart and i didn't look for another).
i also do rock climbing, cross-country skiing, play some occaisonal soccer (my big sport from age 5 through high school - played varsity my sophomore year then quit). and ultimate frisbee although i haven't found a team since i've been in Europe. plus Karate, although i haven't done any in the last 3 years... and in Oregon i kayaked, but i sold my boat when i left. and i've surfed a few times and windsurfed a little (so much gear and wind-dependent).
i don't know if it's really a "sport" (i don't do bodybuilding competitions) but i weight train 2 days per week.
i occaisonally play basketball. i run a few times a month (have done 3 triathlons and some duathlons and adventure races). i swim ever so often (a few times a year). back in texas i used to wakeboard and waterski (slalom and barefoot) but have only 3 times in the last 5 years...
i RARELY watch spectator sports and when i do it's usually some sport i do (like cycling or volleyball). i only have so much time and i would just rather DO something myself than watch someone on TV --- and if i do watch on TV i go out and do the sport right away (unless not possible).
i do not understand people who never actually play the sport they are into, but think they are experts from watching them on t.v. also, i do not understand sports that require very little exercise or endurance, such as baseball.
i think that's a very Nortwest/Oregon attitude as there are few big sports teams (Trailblazers, Kings, and the Seattle football team) and when most people say they're "into sports" it means PARTICIPATING, when in most of the rest of the world it means they like to follow the Cubs or Dolphins or TV...
oh, i forgot --- i hate baseball. i think it's about the most boring thing one can watch (ok, or golf on TV)

Mountain biking is my favorite. I come from the far east so martial arts was also a big part of my life as well as competing in their tournaments. I hold a bunch of black belts but only because i started when I was 5. However, unlike most of those who have answered I love baseball. I used to play baseball (1st base and center field ) for my high school varsity team in New York. They say one of the hardest skills is hitting a ball coming at you close to hundred miles and hour (although in high schcool it was more like 85mph) Threr is nothing like catching a fly that disappears into the sun. Of course, because i loved endurance sports i kept my self in shape at the time through martial arts and track and field. I miss those days. Not alot of opportunites for women to play baseball. I've played fast pitch softball but it's not the same.
Hi new member here-
I'd like to put my plug in for Squash.
I think it's like playing chess and fist fighting at the same time and I love it!

By the way Repp5 - welcome to the forums.
Scuba diving, although alot of
people don't consider it a sport.
Cricket was interesting tho I never played
(heck it took me a few months just to understand
the game!).

Cycling is my most favourite sport, it's easy on the joints, it's fresh on the face, it's great for my personality. It's very easy to start riding, I learnt to ride within a few hours. It's easy to put in the miles. It tones up my body so well that it allows me the perfect physique.
Running would be next. I like the running part where your leg lifts and pounds, bringing you into your next stride within split seconds. When you run fast, you get lots of respect, because it has a lot to do with the mind. During sports meet and stuff, they see the pain you go through and acknowledge the effort you've put in.
i played baseball and ran cross country in high school. baseball does require a bit of endurance. if you had my coach, you'd have some endurance.
i used to play street hockey, till i broke my ankle. that kinda ended that. (still too chicken to get back on blades)
now its bowling (sport?) and cycling (newbie).

I love baseball and loved playing it when I was a kid. There's no greater feeling than coming into pitch with the tying run on 3d and getting the hitter to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Also played American football in H.S. Our school was so small that we only had 25 come out when I was a senior. Everybody played both ways and on special teams. You just had to. What a great time.
Learned to play some rugby and soccer in college. When I was living and traveling overseas you could always make friends if you knew a little about soccer.

i didn't want to offend anyone about baseball, i'm sure it takes a lot of skill (i know i wouldn't be able to even hit a fastball). also i realize that the training can be very intensive in baseball.
i just think of sports as exercise, not just standing in the grass, maybe running 15 feet to catch a ball every 10 minutes. :p
lol.
i've been wanting to get more into kayaking, rock-climbing, paragliding... the list goes on, but there's only so much time.
i've always loved the feeling of running- just using only your legs to get you somewhere fast is so simple and natural.
Gonesh9:
Doesn't offend me. You're right that baseball doesn't involve endurance in the way that soccer or basketball does. It's more of short bursts of high effort. There is a different kind of endurance involved in being in the hot sun all summer, though.

i can see that-
also i was just thinking how in baseball the pros play so many more games a season than in most sports, and all over the country. i'd be exhausted from the jetlag alone!

Football!!!! (I guess some of the less educated of my countryfolk call it soccer  ) Unfortunately, I've picked up the habit.
What's in a name, though? Soccer is the ultimate sport (even above cycling). It is a combination of aerobic activity, coordination, competition, and socializing. Which is not to say that cycling doesn't have these attributes, but soccer offers them to me in greater degree.
I also like to play volleyball and basketball and I like to watch an occasional baseball game.
I don't believe anyone has mentioned curling yet... :roflmao:

I wouldn;t classify Bowling as a sport... anything you can do with a cold one in one hand and a non-filter hanging out of yer mouth can only be classified as a recreation :-)
That being said, I love to bowl... Was in a league a few years ago with some guys i worked with... we were a bunch of 20-something punks, who really only played for fun, and cheap league beer... and we ended up winning the whole thing much the the chagrin of the "old" guys that were out there like they were playing on the PBA tour... that may be an understatement.. byt the end of the league.. the damn well hated us :-)
Other than that.. I love baseball... to the unknowing eye, it is just a bunch of guys in a field.. but there is actually a lot of strategy involved... as for whoever said that these guys don;t have endurance... you play 162 games in the Summer heat.. especially in places like Phoenix where it can be 120 degrees in August... or NY where the humidity is nasty in the Summer...
I also like to play roller Hockey, but haven't ina few years... the guys i played with got too angry, and it started to get violent.. so I quit playing... don;t need to deal with that, especially from people i called friends...
I could care less about Football, and most of Basketball... hockey is fun to watch.. but usually only do so during Playoffs...
Yeah I think that is about it...
Jeff
Running, but I have not raced for two years.
Football. My parents have had Chargers season tickets for 35+ years.
Of course baseball. The best contact hitter of the last 50 years played his entire career in San Diego, and is now the coach at one of my alma maters.
Hockey. I used to play roller hockey, but no ice hockey.
Generally speaking, I would rather play than watch.

Too fat for most sports, but I do enjoy a good weight training session in the gym, or perhaps a rowing session.
Watch the motorbike racing to...nowt like it.
Walking lots.... is that a sport? :)
When I trim down, I'll probably do more cycling, and who knows become a fitness multisports junkie.
Yup, I can see that....

Ice Hockey is my number one sport, allthough it has lost some ground in the last 3 years due to my looser high school varsity coach, I was the back-up goalie and 3rd string goalie in my 3 years on my division II public high school hockey team (not an great level of hockey), and now I'll be walking on a NCAA Division III powerhose at RIT, that will show him. Mountain biking and lacrosse are tied for 2nd at the moment, but after this years season, I won't pick up a lax stick untill I teach my kids how to play. This summer will be my first of road biking, and that will get right up in the top three.

Goodness, you Canadians are all the same. You should be able to realize that he was referring to football (soccer to some of you).
Soccer -- A pseudo-sport used to sell minivans and SUV's to yuppie mothers. Soccer hasn't been a real sport since Pele. The only thing I like about it is the enthusiasm of the announcer GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALL!!!!
tennis.. i used to play 2-5hrs a day. and swimming and volleyball -- played alot in highschool varsity.
i used to ride my road bike to the tennis club.. that's how i got into cycling...

i run. i'm a fairly good runner and it's what i do mostly during the winter. i'm also a massive rugby fan. i watch the game fairly religiously [go hurricanes! go lions!] and i used to play. i was a... ahem... hooker on our club's second team for the longest time, and played in secondary school and college.
i don't play anymore, though i do drink beer.
I played rugby for a long time, but now I just referee it. I play tennis and golf and enjoy watching hockey. I'm a huge Colorado Avalanche fan, but they choked this year.:(

baseball is the best sport. it is a thinking man's sport. of the team sports, height gives one an advantage in basketball, strength an advantage in football, etc. but baseball is a sport where you have to anticipate, think ahead, have agility, hand-eye coordination. there is strategy. explosive speed + you don't have to be the biggest guy to hit with authority and power. but the best thing about baseball that not many sports can boast ---> there is no time clock. you can hit for as long your team is proficient & limit your time in the field by defending well. there are nuances that are lost on most people. the MTV generation needs the video game sports where there is action every moment.
ESPN has trivialized most sports into a slam dunk or a home run. ESPN has ruined an entire generation into thinking that sport is a highlight reel. And as a result most sports are not played properly anymore.
i only watch sports i can/have played. football is the ultimate gladiator sport. soccer is a wonderful game once you learn about it. golf, diving, cycling and great individual sports.
i qualify playing catch with my son or pitching to him as playing baseball. tossing a football around, etc. going on a bike ride with my children.
but isn't the #1 sport in the world fishing?
RiPHRaPH: And the Cubbies got the best manager in baseball, all because of Peter Magowan's ego. Giants fans are warming to Felipe Alou, but there's no one better than Dusty.

I'm impressed RiphRaph you have a tonne of patience. I am definately one of those kids (not anywhere near a kid but still young) that needs constant action and something to accupy me or I can't watch it...either that or the chance of watching something get mutilated...I sometimes wish I could enjoy the little things in life but whenever I have tried I end up too bored to continue playing/doing them. I envy you :D
And no...I can't do fishing...I need to leave within a few minutes because nothing is happening and I haven't caught 10 fish yet ;)

I'M with RiPHRaPH baseball is such a great sport but it seems like they are trying to change it so much. I remember we didn't have any fans here at the games until the M's did so well back in '95 now we are lousy with them and you almost have to explain the game to most of them. They all seem to think that a low scoring game is boring but I find that is when it is most intense usually there is some pretty good ball playing and strategy to watch and Stor Mand don't forget womens figure skating and gymnastics
edit:spelling
I participated in a range of endurance sports from hiking/backpacking/mtn.trail(and offtrail) jogging/beach jogging/cycling/skiing which I cut back on or eliminated to focus on weight training .Now I have added cycling and occasional hiking back into the mix as many of the others are limited by my current So. Fl. location.I like to follow college football and professional baseball and to a lesser extent college basketball but mostly just over the internet (internet broadcast/recruiting /stats/records etc.)where you can focus on other things as well as the game. I don't even have a tv and find watching sports particularly baseball too boring and encompassing(even the Yankees who I have liked since I was a kid). I find even listening to baseball boring but will sometimes keep a game tracker open. So I would agree that I generally like to participate in sport activities rather than watch them.
