Best tire for packed gravel / urban road riding

I don't anticipate serious mud riding, so I'm looking for something that rolls well on asphalt but has enough width and side tread to handle some packed trail riding. Basically a balance between knobbies and slicks.

Ritchey Speedmax Pros.

You can jam them up to 90psi for the road and enjoy the minimal center tread for low rolling resistance, but still have fun with the side lugs for off-rad stuff. If you let even more air out and run them at a lower psi, then they're great trail tires and race tires as well.

i second that....the ritchey's are relatively cheap and do really well for mixed-surface riding. i didn't like them so much for racing, but they're great for commuting and trail riding. it's been mentioned here in other threads, but watch out making hard turns on the road with these tires, the side-knobbies don't grip that well on pavement.

One more for the speedmax......I'm on my second set in the past year....nice all around tire.

Another vote for the speedmax pros. Folding tire for $25. You cant't beat that. They also work great as a race tire at low pressures (40~45psi).

The pro is a folding tire. Thus the side wall is abit more flexible. A flexible side wall will allow for a bigger foot print a lower tire pressures. This becomes important when riding/racing in the dirt. The tire compound may or may not be softer than the comp. If the comp is harder it could potentially last longer on the road.

Continental Contact tire is great for packed dirt or asphalt. I ride these on that type of terrain or Continental Twisters on climbs and more advanced off road. Anything radical I go to my MTB.
