In 1895, Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovksy became the first woman to cycle around
the world.

... packing only a change of underwear and a pearl-handled revolver, Annie Londonderry “sailed away like a kite down Beacon Street,” according to the Boston Evening Transcript.

Times have changed, eh?

amazing story, one awesome lady.

She earned her way selling photographs of herself, appearing as an attraction in stores, and by turning herself into a mobile billboard, renting space on her body and her bicycle to advertisers eager to benefit from this colorful spectacle on wheels.

Heinz Stücke (http://www.bikechina.com/ct-heinzstucke1z.html) does something similar to finance his 40 years on the road, he sells little booklets on the street corners with photos of his travels. Sends postcards to people asking for a donation.

She was pretty special.

I once read account of a guy riding across the US in olden days on a high wheeler. When farm dogs ran out to attack him he shot them dead!
