Asia - pinoy bikers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

hello,
any pinoy bikers here?

I'm not Filipino, but I was in Makati a couple months ago on vacation. I give you a lot of credit for riding in Manila. I was afraid to even walk across the street. I saw one cyclist while I was there. Where are the bike shops around Metro Manila? My g'friend will be there again soon and I want her to pick me up a jersey. Does San Miguel Beer have any jerseys?

i don't think there are any san mig jerseys available but i'll ask around keep an eye out for you. makati is actually a nice place to bike in but only on sundays. there are other nice places to bike like around mall of asia on weekends and early in the morning. there's plenty of space during those times but no trees. tagaytay (around 70km from manila) is a popular destination to bike although its a long steady climb.
bike shops: the more popular ones are located in cartimar in pasay city (about 10 to 15 minutes east of makati). you can find low to high end stuff there. another place would be quiapo BUT i wouldn't recommend going to that place unless you know of a local who can bring you there. the prices are a little cheaper but not really worth the hassle unless you live or pass by the area often.
some of the bike shops that you see in the makati malls are not really that dedicated to bikes. they're just there to sell. cartimar is a good place to go. christie's, velocity and beng's are the shop names that comes to mind. there's also performance bike shop although i don't know if its still there. all of those have low to high end stuff from almost all brands.

I'll pass the shop names and places on to my gf. Thanks for the info.

central rider: i got to visit cartimar today and unfortunately none of the shops i looked at (4) had any san miguel jerseys. all the had was the smart and casino filipino team jerseys. shop names are christie's bike shop, the bike room (owned by beng, christie's sister), ballistic, ross cycles and velocity (it was closed today i don't know why) tell her to go there on a week day when there's not much people it can get hectic on a weekend starting on fridays and right after paydays (15th and 30th of the month).

Salamat. She's going next month so I told her to go to Cartimar, she knew where I was talking about. I want her to pick up a jersey, P.I. themed of some sorts. I'm sure she'll find something. Laters, C_R.
If your friend can't find any san mig or P.I. themed jersey, you can request the store owner to ask the jersey supplier to make one for you. Personalized....you will have to add a little to the price....just my opinion...

yup. they do. so if you want to go that route have your size measurements ready.

Thanks for the suggestions. She'll only be there a few days. I'm sure they can't get it done that soon. No big deal. I'm sure she'll find a jersey for me.

Hello,
I've messaged headless about this, but as he suggested, maybe someone here will be able to help me.
I will be travelling SE Asia in 2008, and will be in the Philippines beginning of 2008.
I plan on doing some bicycle touring (not necessarily in Philippines though), but since it will be my homebase while travelling through asia... I'm wondering...
does anyone know if they sell folding bikes in Phil? And if so, how much, what type. I'm looking for Dahon's, Brompton's or any copies... ie. Merc....
I heard from headless that they sell the lower end ones... but so far, I'm not sure if they are worth it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks...

the ones i've seen so far i wouldn't really recommend. all of them so far have cheap drum brakes and 16" wheels. i have a couple of bike shops that trying to source middle to high end folding stuff and i have not heard from them yet. i'll try to check within the week as i have to log in some riding time 8)

Every April for the past eight years, the Firefly Brigade have been mobilizing people to celebrate cleaner air initiatives via a leisurely bicycle ride around Metro Manila dubbed Tour of the Fireflies (ToF). The ToF is a 50-kilometer bicycle ride around Metro Manila at an easy, controlled pace that allows anyone who can ride a bike to participate and have fun. The cyclists don colorful, environment- themed costumes while pedaling at approximately 12-15 kilometers per hour through at least six cities. The main objective of the event is to raise public awareness about the health and environmental dangers of air pollution.
The theme this year is CYCLE FOR CLEAN ENVIRONMENT and is a celebration of initiatives for sustainable transportation and environmental protection. This is in synergy with international Earthday efforts which makes the ToF a perfect Earth Day event. Our major partner is the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The Tour will passthrough the cities of Pasig , Taguig, Makati , Pasay , Manila and Quezon City . Start and end venue will be at the Tiendesitas where a morning and afternoon program will be staged.

Hi there.
I am a newbie in this forum.
Glad to read all your posts.
I am a rookie of mountain biking but i travelled almost 9 towns here in Cavite.
I am from Dasmarinas and Tagaytay is a nice place to be with mountain biking.
Does any of you (esp. headlessspider) knows any plan of tour here in Cavite?
Prompt reply is highly appreciated.
Thanks. :)

well, there's none that i know of. what i do know is that roadies often go to cavite via the daang hari road and the ones going to and from tagaytay. although it would be intersting to go through the back roads of cavite.
there's actually a nice one from general trias to carmona -- if i remember correctly.

Are there any places online that sell Asian specific team cycling jerseys? We hope to go to the Phillipines in a couple of years but I don't want to wait that long. I'd like to get either a Pinoy or Chinese jersey since I'm half/half. (or as my Pinay wife calls me: banana. Yellow on the outside, white on the inside! Doh!)
Thanks!

hi all,
I was born in the Philippines, but moved to Canada and am now living in the States, but I still go back every couple of years to see relatives and be tempted with lures of moving back home.
I've been a fairly dedicated cyclist for the past few years and lately have gotten into randonneuring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randonneuring) (basically non-competitive ultra-distance endurance cycling). On 24 August, I hope to become the first Filipino to ride and complete Paris-Brest-Paris, the world's oldest active bike ride. I realize that it's a bit late to be asking this question, but does anyone have leads being able to pick up a Pinoy themed jersey so I can adequately represent my homeland? I'm already planning on sewing on a Philippine flag patch to my saddle bag, but was hoping for something more visible.

Hello... if you are near San Francisco, I have a short sleeve version of this jersey; it's XL (I'm 5'8", 180 lbs, and it's kinda tight)... pm if interested

thanks, Jesus, but unfortunately, I'm in New England, as far from San Francisco as one can get in the Lower 48. It's a pity, because I think it might have fit (5'10, 170lbs.)
Kumusta na kayong lahat. As you can see with my name, pinoy na pinoy (actually GI na GI). Use to ride a lot when I was young (and foolish) in our little province of Zambales, now starting to get back into riding again in Pacific Northwest. Currently, riding an old Specialized Allez 24 (yard sale special), but saving some money to get to something like TRANSITION or Allez Elite Compact.

hey lakay! good you're riding again. back here it keeps on raining so not much riding going on. ugh.
Nice jersey, but I'm not into that yet. For now, long sleeve shirt with baggy shorts will do. Its good to be back riding again. My 11 year old daughter got me started and we found out that their is a 16 miles of blacktop trail not far from my residence.

Hi there everyone! I'd like to know if there's anyone into mountain biking here? I'm kinda new so I sure would appreciate some help in setting up my first mountain bike. I used to ride a BMX but now I've grew an appreciation for mountain biking. I'm from Iloilo and the terrain around Western Visayas are very competitive. Thanks!

I might be going to the PI in May (Lucban) and was wondering what the prices of jerseys are compared to the States. A decent jersey here is about $50 US.
I was going to ask our local pinoy rider in the Phil about that one but Chrome got ahead of me. My niece is going home this christmas, it would be cool to have one of those with philippine flag on the left sleeve.

Hello Lakay! Where in the pacific northwest are you? Am in South King County, WA. Just recently took up cycling, and am superambitioning the STP one day ride. Any idea of others who are also interested? If so forming a paceline group for the event would be super...a pinoy group no less!

Hello headlessspider...have any idea how much a sram force entire groupset would cost over in the cartimar or even quiapo stores?
Kumusta Zen, I reside in Marysville area and ride in Centennial Trail or Highway 9 when weather permits. That is also my long range plan to ride STP and maybe MS Whatcom/Skagit.

Mabit naman Lakay....I live in the Kent area....a short ride away from Soos Creek Trail (a mere 6 mile stretch compared to your Centennial). Am building up a contingent and logistics support for the STP one day ride in 2008. Interested in joining?

Nice looking bike Lakay...saan napunta ang aero bars?
Kumusta mga Pinoy!!! We have a whole bunch of Pinoy riders here in NY/NJ. We have a weekend ride around 50-60 miles lahat Pinoy mga 7-8 guys
Lakay, nice ride!
Thanks, tinangal ko yung aero bars. Nakatago for the mean time, I probably put it back this spring and try it. The weather has been really sh*tty here in the PacNorWest, so mileage doesn't add up that much.

A bit bumpy due to a lot of potholes. I pass by Polo near Obando then enter Mcarthur Highway. Highway is Ok but a lot of jeeps and trucks. I still havent reached Pampanga but Im exploring the trails as well. Lots of resorts and you will need mudguards a lot of wet roads. But this route is mostly roads but will check some trails. I saw one forum that had pictures of their bulacan ride Im trying to find that place where there are streams and countryside feel.
ishanshade, magkano ang mga riding jersey ngayon diyan sa atin.

sorry guys for not answering sooner. been busy. active on another cycling forum (http://www.pinoyroadies.org/forum/index.php) as well.
anyways;
foldbike: you're best bet would probably be christy's bike shop. that's where i saw the 15k folding bike. the cheaper ones are also available -- that's around 5 - 7k.
zen_ride: i'm not really sure since its new and i'm a shimano-leaning-towards-campy kind of guy. but i can ask around if you want.
jaythemessenger: pre, try and visit pinoyroadies.org. a lot of us are there. what kind of bike are you riding? i'm a lurker of the singlespeed/fixed gear thread here...
Uy thanks for the link sa Pinoy roadies. I just registered. Just lurking right now. Maybe post later on. Cheers!

to the one asking about local jerseys, the good ones go from 950 to 1.2k in philippine pesos. so roughly around us$ 21 to us$30.
