Hey everyone,

My old bike is pretty much totaled, it would cost me a lot to fix and its a little out of date. So I am buying a new bike. I usually do singletrack and am looking for something around 400 dollars. I went to the store and looked at a few bikes. I told the guy at the store that I wanted a hardtail that would last me a long time and has decent components. He said that my best options were the Specialized Rockhopper, and the Trek 4500. They were both priced at 500 dollars. I am willing to spend that extra 100 if it is really worth it. My questions to you guys am I getting much more for that 100 dollars? or could I get away with getting a good bike at 400 or maybe even around 350? Also, neither of them come with disc brakes. I am fine with V brakes but I have never tried disc so I don't know if it is worth paying extra for or not. Also, I have a friend that might be able to help me build a bike if I buy the parts separate. Do I save a lot of money if I buy the parts and build it myself?

So, right now it looks like a rockhopper for $500, if you think I could do a lot better for less I could use some suggestions.

See if you can find any dealers that still have '06 models. I got a rockhopper comp for $400!! Needless to say I am awefully happy about that.

For that price, avoid anything with discs, because everything will most likely be crap quality. V-Brakes stop you just fine.

Also, it would be a good idea to see about bikes made in '05/'06, as they probabily have better components, and have a lot of life left in them.

If you're going to go discs, look for avid bb5's. The hayes mx2 is the next step down. Anything lower than that (tektro or promax for example) and you're better off staying with v's i think.

^ I'll +1 that, not a fan of crappy discs at all....

look around too - there are other bikes in your range than the rockhopper and the trek - as long as you find one that fits and you like, go for it!

Damn! I felt good about getting mine for half again that price! Good bike though. I'm having a ball on mine.

Thanks for the help everyone. I appreciate the input. I think I am gonna look for an 06' or 05' rockhopper and save a few bucks.
