I'm posting this in an attempt to help out a friend of mine. He was over at my place on Christmas day and some a**holes stole his bike from in front of my building. Yep.. real Christmas spirit there. He doesn't have much money and uses his bike as his main means of transportation.. i felt bad and promised i'd help him try to find a replacement. I was planning to find something on Craigslist, but the problem is that used bikes in NYC seem to go for way too much money. His budget is about $200, and there seems to be nothing in that price range in this city except rubbish.. Not looking for anything fancy, but obviously not a rusted deathtrap, and definitely a road bike.

It occurred to me that there must be some people here who have an extra beater bike they might be willing to part with for a reasonable price... hopefully? ;) One too many salvaged bikes in your garage, and your wife is about to give you an ultimatum? Here's your chance :D

Anyway.. so we're looking for a decent reliable road bike, nothing fancy or flashy, just a trusty 'working bike' for transportation in the city. My friend is about 6"2 with a 34" inseam and long arms, so it needs to be a large frame.

I'm a passable DIY bike mechanic, but a bike in good working order would be greatly preferred.

The budget is about $200. Pickup is possible within a couple hours of NYC, or shipping could be arranged too..

Thanks! :)

I don't know that I'd call it a beater, but I have a 57cm Miyata Seven Ten that's just too tall for me. It's got a 33" standover and I have a 31" inseam, but it's just sooo pretty I kept hoping I'd grow. It needs new tires (27x1), but is otherwise in great shape.

If you're intersted PM me and we can work something out.

I'm not sure if you still need a bike but I'm desperately trying to sell my bike It is used and when bought new a couple years ago was 1000 dollars. so it definately isn't a beater but the only problem is i am on the west coast let me know if you'd like a pic to tell me what you think

Well, macsaorsa's bike is too small, and azky84 hasn't responded, so i'm definitely still looking!

And yeah, 'beater' may be a bit misleading. I just mean a reliable good quality bike that isn't flashy or expensive.

thanks,

robin

I have a couple of huge ass bikes (62-63cm) that would probably fit him. The first is a blue Sekai in decent shape and a Fugi that has some cosmetic issues. Both are made of 1020 steel. The Fugi has no bars/wheels/brakes/seat but I could set it up with some decent stuff from my parts bin, or you could take it how it sits. The Sekai has steel wheels but I have some alloy wheels you could have. PM me if either bike sounds interesting, I could set you up with something complete and shipped as little as $100.

I have a 58cm Raleigh with 7 speed 105/STI triple crank. It is a 1997 but low low miles. AL frame/fork and an extra-tall Nitto Technomic stem, 28mm tires. Too big for me. Hope this helps.

I have a 1973 Schwinn Continental ten speed 60cm that's in decent shape and was my only mode of transportation a few years ago. Kind of nice vintage look to it. It does have some shallow rust spots on the frame, but is otherwise fine. $100. And I'm in Philadelphia.
