I noticed when I do my long 4 hour Sunday rides in the afternoon, my heart is up around 75-80 BPM resting that evening and I am therefore very warm. Is this unhealthy or normal recovery?

I am not a metabolic expert. But I believe that this is normal. It's one of the reasons that aerobic exercise can be such a factor in weight loss. It can help "stoke the fire" and raise metabolic rates for much of the rest of the day.

On the other hand, an elevated heart rate in the morning before your ride can be a sign of overtraining.

Generally, after a long and hard work out, one's resting heart rate will be elevated for a number of hours. I think the "extra beats" are there to provide more blood for repairing damaged tissue.

well in general i agree that it sounds normal.

and not knowing your normal pulse i can't say, but for me personally 75-80 (i assume you mean while sitting doing nothing) would be really high as my sitting pulse is about 55-60 (true resting pulse about 48). i've never measured it, but i would say in the 5-6 hours after a long hard ride mine's probably 10-15 beats higher than normal. this is just normal recovery.

another factor could be dehydration... if you are short on water it can increase your pulse.
