Road Cycling - Shimano Exage 300EX...information needed.

Hello All,

I have a road bike with Shimano Exage 300EX gear on it. Does anybody know anything about this setup? It is on a Bianchi, that I think is around 10 years old. I have the complete setup on my bike. Is this a good system? Does anyone know what it is comparable to today? And.....I have yet to need to use the 53 cog on the crankset. :) Thanks for any information that you can share. - Ted

Today's technolgy has surpassed the Exage 300 groupo by a long shot. If my memory serves me correct the hubs are seven speed. If so you are basically out of luck for compatible shifters from todays tech. You could probably use your brakes with existing tech, but everything else would not mate up to well.

The downtube shifters should work with any mech you want. The groupset is of adaquate quality for regular riding, it was somewhere near the bottom of the roadie lineup, designed for entry-level bikes. Ive ridden 300 on an old Canondale and it all works fine.
Replacement cogs may be a problem, check out the particular pattern of freehub, there is usually some wordage on the locking ring. The spline pattern may have changed. You may be able to pick up some 3rd party cogs (eg from Marchisio), or fit a modern pattern of freehub.

I have an Exage Sport grouppo on my old Centurion... it's decent stuff... nothing compared to today's stuff... mine, however, is a 6 speed... I did pitch out the Bio-Pace chainring that was on there, and switched in a Ultegra chainring, and then had to replace the chain with a 7 speed chain to make it run smooth... My new bike will have Ultegra :-)

Is it a Centurion Accordo?

Mine is a six speed. For now, I think that it is a good excercise/ training bike. I only have $50 in it. I did put a new tire and tube on it. The prior owner took good care of it, I have known him for 10 years. I don't know how long it will last, but if/ when it fails, I'll likely get a Sirrus, they are so fine looking, or something of that nature. - Ted

you can still find 7spd sti shifters. I think there are still LBS selling old 7spd rsx shftrs -- although shinamo isn't making the rsx anymore.

Wow, they used to make an Exage group for the mountain scene, too. My '92 Giant mountain bike was spec'd out with it. Good stuff on the mountain bike. In fact, I've still got the stock brakes and crankset on that bike.

agreed :)

when something breaks then think about upgrading, for now just enjoy it... why spend all sorts of money to upgrade adding 2-3 gears? and friction shifting isn't at all bad IMHO ;)

my exage group is SIS.. well at least the Rear derailleur is.. the plastic thingy on the FRont shifter broke.. adn that is friction only now... probably near first generation SIS... it works alright for the most part..a s long as it is adjusted right
