Milwaukee Bike shops, Which one?

I have been to most of them. I have not found a favorite, trying to find out what other people think of the shops around here? I ride mountain bikes, and have not found a "BEST" one yet. What do you think?

I'm out in Waukesha and shop Wheel & Sprocket's Delafield store as well as Cyclesmith here in town. Neither seems focused on Mtn bikes but both have good folks behind the counter

The Delafield W&S is probably my favorite out of all of the W&S locations. Cyclesmith is ok as long as you don't go in when the kids are working -- there will be times when it seems like nobody working in the shop is over 20 years old.

You might try Ben's Cycle on Lincoln. A bunch of college guys who know their stuff and a pretty good mix of roadies and MTB.

You might try Ben's Cycle on Lincoln. A bunch of college guys who know their stuff and a pretty good mix of roadies and MTB.

That's my vote. Family owned and run for the second generation. Guys working there know their stuff. If you need a wheel built, they do it in the shop, as well as frame brazing. Large eBay operation too.

Big difference between a bike 'store' and bike 'shop' in my mind.

Check out Emery's Cycling & Fitness in Wauwatosa. Great selection for road and tri bikes.

I'm guessing that since you're on the East Side, you've been to the Bikesmiths at Locust and Murray. They're my favorites. Such nice guys. I bought my Rush Hour there, dunno about mountain bikes.

I like Ben's Cycle so much that I trek from the northern suburbs to get their.

It beats the ****ty Grafton Ski and Cyclery, which is 95% ski and 5% cycle ****.

+1 for Bens, I bought my last bike from them and will buy my next one from them too, very nice guys, talk to Vince or Allen, plus you can't beat their prices.

PS. Crankdaddys is also top notch, very good guys, good fitting scans and spin classes.

+5 (or what ever we are up to) on the Ben's recommendation. I also make a special trip to get to the shop. Everyone there is really down to earth, and there are decent deals to be had.

I've been in most of them over the years. Bought bikes at W&S (mostly @ the expo) and Wares. Had work done at W&S and Cory. Bought parts at W&S, Crank Daddies, Emorys, bens, REI. I don't have anything bad to say about any but most often end up at W&S Hales/Brookfield and REI. Mostly due to location and my travel routes. I've found REI to very competitive on price.

I've had some bad experiences at the Wheel & Sprocket in Hales Corners, though admittedly it was years ago. Both me and a friend stopped going there. Shop guy was a know-it-all-but-really-I-dunno-shizzle kinda guy and there were a few of them at the time and the sales folks weren't much better. When I got my recumbent (several years ago and have since sold) the guy that dealt with them was great. I've also caught W&S pulling mark 'em up-downs at their expo sales. Anyway, I rarely go there now.

Lately I've been hitting up either Ben's (those guys are awesome), Wares (they helped me out with my clunker SS build and the manager is a really helpful IF you catch him on a good day), or Emory's on Lisbon (lotsa highend there).

I wandered into the Bike Doctor out in Dousman a few weeks ago and was VERY pleasantly surprised by the service and the staff of a shop that's off the beaten path. I'm shopping for a Tri bike and they wouldn't even begin to talk price and selection until they had me fitted and matched my "optimal" position to the geometry of specific bikes they carried. The process was great and I've been back several times already for other items. They're still trying to track down the Orbea Aletta I wanted (Orbea USA is currently out of stock in my size) but have promised to make me an equivalent deal in another bike should that one not be available.

Cory the Bike Fixer has a selection of used bikes. Or look on ebay/craigs list. You can always find old road bikes suitable for conversion to singlespeed/fixie on ebay. If you go that rout, Ben's has a large selection of singlespeed/fixie parts.
