That's a classic case of two newbie bidders (one with zero feedback, one with 8) in a frenzy. Hope the seller ends up getting paid.

I thought the bidder name twsindypa looked familiar: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=258146

I passed up one of these in the local Salvation Army store for $50 because it was overpriced!

Why don't I ever get bidders like that on my auctions??????

Funny you posted this, as I just saw a wanted add on the Tampa craig'slist today for a UO8. They aren't too impressive in my opinion. I like my Gitane much better and it was $370 cheaper, lol. Must be some hipster fad or something.

Ok, that is just insane,

And this kinda crap is why I HATE E-Bay, now every junk dealer is going to think his UO-8 is worth a fortune. I hope twsindypa steps back and thinks this through before the end of the auction.

I'd love a UO-8 in 56cm, but it's going to have to be a heck of a lot cheaper then $400 !!!

I probably just steped over the line, I PM'ed twsindypa.

Hey it's not the sellers fault people are crazy, it's just dumb luck as they say that someone is bidding this much. It is insane though, I agree.

No kidding! The last one I sold I got $150 for, and thought I'd done well.

Crazy, yes...... but if someone wants it that bad, it's not the sellers fault..... it's described fairly enough and presented as what it is.

Like someone else said - I hope he actually gets paid.

That IS outrageous! It looks like the fork may be bent. And the saddle looks to be pretty dry... but the Simplex Prestige still has its pully wheels in tack!

With 0 feedback buyers running up a price like that, against someone who appears legit, I always suspect shill bidding. Though $400 from twsindypa does seem high. Maybe he knows something we don't. But look at the Q&A for the item. twsindypa states his serious interest...perfect opportunity for a seller to employ shill bidding.

I noticed that too. The headset doesn't look square with the headtube either. The stem seems laid back some. Weird.

Wow, crazy.
My UO8 rides great but I'd never pay much more than what to took to buy and restore mine, $120.

The guy selling it did everything the correct way, and I'm not trying to be critical of Tom, far from it.

I just think it's shocking when someone gets "Buck Fever" like this.

And the front fork does look bent, my fork on the Austrian tourer-oddball looked just like that. It was a scary ride.

Some people just have to have, what they have to have!

eBay is a gamble either way, as buyer OR seller.
But gambling CAN be sooo much FUN, that's why people get addicted to it.

Now let's see how long it is before another UO8 (in that condition) goes for north of $400.
And I'd bet that suddenly there will an abundance of them.:D

Yeah that thing bid upwards because it's clean and looks very "vintage" and "French" to a newbie. My local LBS (Heavy Metal bikes) in San Francisco sells lots of mediocre but flashy old bikes like Viscount, Windsor, Gitane, Peugeot, etc. for around $350 a pop to 20-something hipster chics.

Yep, I am guilty of being one of two newbies overbidding on the Peugeot UO-8 in question. A little (a lot) embarrasing, considering I am building a website on Peugeot AO, UO and UE bicycles http://www.retropeugeot.com. I think the website is a lot more sensible than my bidding habits. I have learned a lot from the experience, and for now I will stick to restoring my Peugeot AO-8, that I inherited from dad for free. My apologies to the vintage cyclery community for contributing to the inflation of old bicycle prices. My thanks to those of you who tipped me off, before I was the not-so-proud owner of a $410 UO-8. Obviously, I will not accept a second opportunity/offer from the EBay seller if the auction winner doesn't pay up.

I'm sure someone reading this has one available, and they might even sell it at a discount: $300.

But seriously, if you are interested in starting a collection, I'll keep my eyes open for you, and pass the word. It's true, though, that Peugeot's command a price that is somewhat inflated. Here's one (http://newyork.craigslist.org/stn/bik/259879768.html) in NYC for only $500, but it's "model 103". Carbolite, isn't that like modern carbon fiber? :)

Did anyone else notice the 6-digit serial number, 516396? Could this really be a 1965? In the U.S. the 1974 and 1975 UO-8s came with stem shifters, although the web-based 1975 European catalogue still shows downtube shifters.

Wow, and I won a Gitane Tour de France with a Brooks seat, almost complete and in pretty decent condition for $180. With Stronglight crankset and a 531 frame.

Maybe I should have bought that Salvation Army UO-8.......

Man! That bike went for almost twice what I spent total on the 9 bikes I purchased in 2006 -- and this includes a U0-10! (and 5 of those were on the road with less than an hour of tire changing/tweaking)!

Yeah, I "only" spent $300 for a like-new Guerciotti with full-boat Dura Ace.

I know you Peugeot owners love your bikes (probably for good reason), but there isn't a thriftt shop in town where you won't trip over the UO8's scattered in the yard. They're everywhere......

Greetings,
Since I unfortunately am somewhat of an expert on this particular bike, the serial number is on the outside of a dropout and doesn't appear to be factory engraved. Judge for yourself (if the image is the right size). Perhaps a dealer engraving? By the way, I have already received the Second Chance Offer from EBay. Should I go for it?
Cheers,

You won't be able to claim this anymore if you go for the "second chance" offer......... :D

A UO8 in that condition is worth about $30-$40, and would sell for maybe $150 after being completely overhauled and made ride-ready..... In a hot bike market.

If you want one, be patient. You can do much better for much less.

Lucky for me trash pick-up isn't til Friday. I had it stripped down naked except for the headset, ready to go. But now I think I'll build it back up. Maybe fixed gear or I'll put all the stuff on it I took off my wife's UO-18.

Only kidding. I have been taking such a thrashing on this discussion board, I just wanted to show that there were no hard feelings and I have a sense of humor. I do not want to go down in history as the guy who bought the $400 UO-8, just the guy who almost bought the $400 UO-8. That's humbling enough.

It's only a matter of time before another PO8 turns up at the dump. It's yours when it happens.

I paid $35 for my cosmetically challenged, single-speed U0-10. I sold it on Craig's list within two hours of posting it for the same price. It had a serial number stamped on the left dropout much like the one in your picture.

The Second Chance Offer I received was a scam that was only sent to my personal Verizon email account, and was not posted in my personal EBay account. I have been in touch with the seller who says the bike was paid for via PayPal and sent via FedEx already. So maybe some of you do want to dust off your UO-8s... Of course, I won't be bidding.

To twsindypa. Don't apologize for the amount you pay for what you want. For the life of me I don't see the value. Especially when you can see what else you can for that kind money. I have seen PX-10s and PY-10s go for less than that. However, from your website is sounds like you have a sentimental attachment to those bikes. Also, it takes at least two interested parties to bid the price up.

And twsindypa, since you did not get the bike, at least you can console yourself with the thought that you made that other bidder pay!! Now, where is that UE-8 of mine,,,oh ya, still hanging from the ceiling, time to get the bids rolling!!
