So I'm about to hit the sack when all of a sudden Solomon (my dog) starts screeching like he's in severe pain. I see him on 3 legs and he's very obviously not putting one of front paws down and holding it very funny (looked like he was stretching it out).

I look at that front leg, but I can't see anything out of place; yet, every time I touch it he screams more. While I'm looking at that front leg, I noticed some blood between two paws on his back paw. I just start dashing to get dressed again so I can run him to emergency vet. He settles down and doesn't appear to be in pain anymore, but I'm taking him anyway.

Emergency vet is pretty slow (and expensive). Long story short is that they took X-rays and found nothing abnormal. She said its probably some kind of "sports injury" and gives me some pain killers for him.

So here I am now....3 hours past bedtime and $200 poorer. I know....I'm not complaining, it could have been much worse. I think I'll still take him in to his regular vet in a few days to get a look over.

What was the deal with the blood on his paw?

Oh yea....forgot to mention that.

She said it's a cist that burst or something. She said it was pretty normal for greyhounds. I never seen 'em have anything like that before. That was one of the main reasons I wanted to take him to his normal vet in a day or two.

Can I have the pain killers?

Oh, one of my dogs, a yellow lab, had a growth removed on his foot a couple weeks ago. We've been doing our best to get it healed. Keeping it covered with gauze, cleaning it, etc. But it isn't looking any better. The vet gave us some new kind of medicine to try on it. Hopefully it'll heal soon and won't turn into anything serious.

She gave him two pain killers....and Rimadyl is the weaker one she said.

Well I'm glad that he is okay. If anything 200 is nothing when it comes to our family. Better to have him safe than to sit back and watch him get worse.

- you got off cheap... the last time we went to the emergency vet (in Largo), it cost $350... (male cat, bladder infection)...

- very amusing night though... we saw a box of bunnies, an injured turkey buzzard (screaming its head off), and a 200-lb. goat suffering from flatulence that quickly emptied out the reception area...

Probably the same one. The one on Belcher, just north of Ulmerton?

I did get off cheap actually...I'm not complaining. When I was there 8 or 9 months ago with the dog I was watching for a lady, it was about $850.

Do you ever get to ride with him? I mean with him running of course. Can you keep up?

What a beautiful dog!!! I'm super glad it was nothing worse. Remember my vet bill 2 months ago?? $1000.00.

I later learned from my vet that I should of had my doggie transferred to her cause she said for that price she could have kept him for a week and still wouldn't have costed that much.

What we will do for our bestfriends!! :)

I ride past a place with many greyhounds, on my road bike quite frequently. I always holler to let them know I'm coming. They come and run alongside the fence. I pedal hard and quick, and they barely break out of a trot, just lope along casually with no problem keeping up. Man I suck!:o

Or is it that the grey's are amazing creatures? That's my guess.:) What is their top speed anyway?
What a great thing to experience on a ride.

The main thing is Solomon is all right and you did the correct thing by going to the vet.

It is too bad that more visits to the emergency pet center do not have a happy ending.

KT,

When I had my four greyhounds one of my females developed two cysts on her lower legs that eventually broke and healed on their own, however, I agree that a follow up with the regualr vet is the way to go. My oldest male grey had a lot of "episodes" with leg, joint pain due to the fact that he raced for 6 years! Better to be safe than sorry though.

KT, your dog is a beauty. glad nothing too bad happened. i hate hearing animals yelp.

vet visits can be really crazy expensive. our little kitten was limping so we took him in. nothing was wrong...he probably just pinched a nerve or something. so, like chumps, we paid $80 for what is essentially animal grade asprin.

Ah yes, the flat $200 emergency vet entrance fee. Grrr. I've been there, most recently with my cat Scuba who was puking like crazy. They didn't know what was wrong, so wanted to run blood tests (another $180), and then keep him for overnight observation (another $200). Pets are expensive.

Turned out he had decided to try eating kitty litter, the super clumping kind. Grrrrr...but he hasn't done it since.

Yup. :)

The books say "41", with horses at "45". But horses can keep it up much longer.

He's beautiful, KT. Hope everything checks out OK with your own vet.

Sounds like you suffered from it more than the goat did.

And how the heck does one get a goat up to 200 lbs? That is one enormous pile of trouble, even without the flatulence.

- that sucker was fat and *huge*! and he had a weird name, too - something like 'Alfredo,' or 'Alberto' (can't remember the name, just the stink!)

:-)

- pardon the pun, but in the end, all that matters is that one's pet comes out better than it went in, right?
