Hey, just clamp a MagLite between your choppers and head out and ride! Just be careful! :D
Yes, you may find you can do without the bus. When I started bike commuting I stopped buying my monthly bus pass ($36). For a couple of years I don't think I ever bought a pass.
Addiction to commuting? yeh it exists i know having cycle commuted for more years than i care to remmeber .
If for some reason I could not get to work on the bike I new it would be a "bad day time"
I think it is all to do with needing a shot of "endorphine" to start your day this biulds up more and more until it is essential to your wellbeing .

I'm just generally addicted to riding. That's the main reason I commute by bike.

My feelings exactly.
Well, biz, welcome to the world of cycling! Addictive? You bet! But what a sublime addiction it is! You become physically stronger, perhaps like me, you loose wieght, you travel around in a mode that is friendly to the environment, and you achieve a mental state close to bliss!
I took my first ride on a multi-speed bike on April 1st, and now, 1300+ miles later, I am having a ball! At first, my 7 mile commute was a chore, but now, it is not enough, so I add little detours to the ride to get in more miles. I love my job, but now in the afternoon, I find my mind wandering to my upcoming ride home!
If a person is going to have an addiction, this is the one to have! Bike on!
It is addicting!! But what a way to go.
I've only been commuting for about a month but I really look forward to riding and almost dread driving. And mass transit (bus, subway, etc.) is not an option for me.
Another thing I've noticed (about me at least) is when I ride the day seems more enjoyable and I don't get as bored. (Yes I hate my job but we've already been down that road in other posts.)
On the days I drive I find the day drags by and I get bored. Boredom leads to the snack machine and that leads to unwanted calories, fat, and a lowered self-esteem for eating that junk in the first place. :(
Ron,
That's about the way I feel too. When I have to drive to work, I never really wake up. Sleepy, bored, irritated by other drivers. It just ain't pretty.
The bike solves so many problems in one shot. Gets you out of traffic, makes the ride to an from work a little adventure, gets your mind alert and the body pumped an awake. Plus for me there's a nice twisty downhill on the way to work that's kick ***! A cup a joe and a shot of adrenaline do the trick everytime!!
Rather than start up a new thread on an old topic I thought I'd add my thoughts to this one.
I got off the bike last night and was floating. Not only am I addicted to this thing called commuting, and riding, but there is like this friggin' high that comes at the end of a great ride. Last night was one of them. I rode my fastest for the year to date, and had the endorphines cooking when I climbed off the bike. It was incredible. With the weather turning it was nice to get out and do 26 miles on the way home, and I didn't have to work today so it was a bonus. And it is the second night I've crashed out for the night and not gotten up in the middle of my sleep cycle.
I'll take that sort of high, addiction any day!
Yea, naisme, I know what you mean. Actually, I only got to ride on Monday this past week. Put in 22 miles on the Rampar. So today, I did 25 on the old Raleigh Grand Prix. Still rides nice even after being hit by that care a few weeks ago. In the morning I may take the Rampar on the same 25 mile route. Some good climbing around the 12.5 mile mark and right a the end. Was fun to take the wheel of a skinny fellow on a fancy new Specialized Allez for a while. He turned off after about a mile. I think he was embarrassed that a fat guy like me riding old steel could hold his wheel. This year I am able to do better than 20mph! That is a HUGE jump from last year. :) Now that really got my endorphines going! Wonder if I'll run accross him in the morning? :roflmao:
