Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - tandems and brevets

Can tandems join in on brevets? I have read a great deal on the US rand. site and I didn't see where it spoke of them.

Or maybe a better question is: What are the rules regarding tandems on these type rides?

Yes they can, and please ride the Arizona series...... right in front of me. :)
According to Audax Club Parisien it just needs to be human powered. Guy at PBP last time around rode it on a kick scooter.

There are no specific rules for tandems. Each rider carries a separate brevet card, just like a solo rider. No special considerations for them either. The same time limits apply.

Tandems start PBP in the "Velo Special" (sp?) groups with the recumbents.

PBP have changed their rules for 2007, bikes/vehicles have to have chain drive. A scooter couldn't enter this time around.

Mrs. Octopus and I have had a lot of fun riding out in brevets. Perfectly fun and perfectly legal! We had a tandem team tackle the Ohio Randonneurs 1000K this past fall; 29,000 feet of climbing on extremely steep hills. They finished with big smiles on their faces!

The organizers of the Manitoba Randonneurs, who have been involved in Randonneuring for probably about 25 years now, have been riding a tandem for about half that time .... including several PBPs.

Just about any human powered machine is allowed.


They do start at a different time on the PBP, but for any other brevet they start and ride with all the other riders.

It was great when I rode in Manitoba ... there were often two tandems out there, and we'd all ride in a long paceline for the first 75 kms or so. The couple I mentioned above are VERY strong riders ... then they'd put the slowest riders right behind them (usually me and one other girl), then the other tandem, and then the rest of the guys ...... and we'd fly!! After about 75 kms though, the strong tandem couple would want to pick up the pace, and so they'd disappear in the distance but the rest of us would try to stay with the slower tandem couple. Lots of fun! :)

My wife and I are planning on riding a tandem on RAGBRAI this summer. If we don't kill each other and are still talking to each other after that, I hope to get her riding in some of the Florida brevets.

Thats cheating- doing it on a Tandem. Map reading without stopping- being handed snacks and cakes without fumbling for them. Just a pity about the back seat driving that goes on.


I ride a few Longer MTB offroad Randonnees on the Tandem and the only problem I have are others that decide that they are going to try and stay with the Tandem. "T"'s may be slow uphill but on the flat you can easily wear out a Solo rider with the speed you get up to without trying, and you know the speed downhill. Then there is the problem of Close riding with Those that are not used to riding with Tandems. They do not realise that Tandems take a lot of room on the road, so for your own safety- Keep your eyes open.
