I've never been there before but Coach Jerry tells me this is a HUGE deal in Madison this Saturday, with lots of cycling stuff and bartering. We're riding out there to check it out this Saturday afternoon.

Just a heads up....

Anyone else planning .... been there??

....OH.....and when I say "riding" out there....that would mean in his van. Yeah, I'm a winter-weather whimp. The nearest I get to a bike this time of year is on the training down in my cycling room!

I'm planning on going out there after I go out for a ride Saturday morning (as long as the roads are safe). Never been there before but it looks like it should be worth the trip.

I would be glad to look for and pick up something for you guys if you give me specifics....no problem.
Jerry says there is a lot of bartering going on there....like a giant rummage sale with all cycling stuff.

Mission accomplished.
At least it's not one of those damn puppets!

You need me to look for anything for you at the show?

I'll have my digital with me and post a few shots here in this forum afterward as well.

Jerry and I will be there about 1:00.
He's gotta stop at some other bike shop to pick up some stock for his place or something like that. This is gonna be a fun day.

Wife was not impressed. I said, "Hey, do we have any plans on Saturday?" I ask because I just don't pay attention when she tells me things, and as far as I know we are leaving for a week long trip somewhere exotic.

She says, "No. Why? What do you want to do?"

"It's about an 1.5 hour drive-"

"NO. It is going to snow this weekend."

10 minutes later..."Where did you want to go? You never did tell me."

"Uh. Madison."

"Wisconsin??!! Let me guess, it's probably some bike thing."

If I keep working on it I might end up there.

HA!

No snow.
Just a few flurries possible and a high of 30 Sat.
Driving conditions will be fine.

Light snow possible Sunday night into Monday morning. You should be clear.

Hmm....I'm really starting to think I might go to this. I've got a lot of parts sitting around that I have wanted to unload to "good homes" I wouln't bother renting space, but maybe have it in the car for the right trade....

My son is sick so I am sooooo going to pay for this if I go. Let's see....wife PO'd because I went and did a bike thing on the weekend? Why it is already starting to feel like summer.

Funny thing is she asked me again tonight what it was I wanted to go to. Before I could even tell her she was giving me all sorts of reasons why I shouldn't go. Doesn't even bother to find out, just hates it because it's bike related.

*begin internal dialouge with God* I know I did some bad things...ok a LOT of bad things in my life, but god do you always have to play the "everyone around me will hate bikes" card again? Why not off one of my pets or something? *shakes head* I know, I know...builds charachter.

you need to learn how to spin this in your favor, man.

she knows how much you want to go, but if you stay home, watch the boy for a while, let her go take a hot bath and have some alone time, you will start stockpiling points to be redeemed when it's most important... when you want to RIDE.

if you want to unload your parts, you know all about eBay.... :)

Oh the drama....

I'm leaving for there in a couple of hours....

Turns out I have to spend all day tomorrow hanging out with her family for my mother-in-law's b-day. Get this for her b-day she wants to sit around and watch the bears....

So her mom said that my wife "should go to the bike thing with him."

Packing up now...whole family will be there.

I think she's going so that there's not enough room to fit any new bikes on the return trip.

Hum, the pics work for me. Sorry I missed everyone, but had a good time nonetheless. Picked myself up some cheap Shimano pedals, and was tempted by a couple of frames.

I did take the opportunity to stop by Eric's bike shop to see if they had any CAAD9s in stock since the LBS here doesn't have any yet. They did -- yippie! Great bike! Not quite as nice as the System 6 they had next to it [drool], but it definately will be my next bike!

CyLowe97
01-14-07, 07:49 AM
I don't see "Pinarello" anywhere on that frame!

I picked up a Campy hat and socks ($15). A bag of 500 nipples (just for you Hip) $5. F and R Skewer set ($7.50). A pair of cheap Wellgo pedals to throw into my stable of bikes that don't use Speedplay.

I pointed Hip out to my wife and she saw his smiling and standing next to Jerry and taking pictures.

She said, "Who? That guy with his boyfriend?" (dead serious).

I said, "Honey, he's not gay."

"Uhhh, he sure looks like it to me."

"I've met his wife."

"Well then the other guy is then." (Meaning Jerry)

"I couldn't tell you."

:D

botto....you absolutely kill me man!
LOVE it.

Psimet....
da hell?
Why didn't you say something? We could have grabbed lunch and shot the shiit.

Now, about that story.....
What the heck about me told Mrs. Psimet that she thought I was gay for cryin' out loud?

Well, at least you ended up there and she even came along. Sorry I missed you guys.

We stopped by Yellow Jersey bike shop in Madison prior to the show. Jerry knows the owner....wow....what a place. Ever been there?

The guy has parts from the 70's....boxes of them in his basement....a real pack rat....been in biz forever.

And no, Jerry is not gay!
In fact, we had a lovely evening with him and Pam that night. They treated us to dinner and get this...a slide show from when he was racing in the 70's! It was AWESOME.

He's got a silver cup that his dad won in a race from 1969 on his shelf.
Virgil Pearce.

Man, what a fun cycling day it was.

FYI....

--Jerry is planning a trip to see three of the spring classics in person.
Just once in my life I have to see that in person....sounds like it will be an awesome trip.

.....

My big purchase at the show Psimet?
Two pairs of Quickstep team socks for $8.00! That's it...that's all I bought.

I offered up 20 bucks on a beautiful old 60's Brooks saddle that I wanted to use as a decoration on a shelf in my cycling room but the guy wanted 30 and wouldn't move on it.

...all part of the game.

I saw you from across the room. Negotiating the traffic with a stroller was a little too difficult to say the least.

I have to cut and paste the address of those pics into a browser in order to see them.

That shot of Jerry - I saw the guy he's talking to. That Schwinn Varsity is his sister's that he found at his parent's house. He said he was cleaning out his van and decided to bring all of that stuff in. Ton of used bottles in bad shape, really worn out gear, etc.

I didn't ask, but I bet that van was "down by the river".

"That guy" is Carl Wilkins, one of the more popular race officials in this part of the country. He's more into grassroots cycling than anyone I've ever met and has always performed his duties to the fullest of expectations, providing a fair race for all participants involved.

Aside from his normal race official duties Carl also gives a lot of time to working with junior racers to try and get them involved (or just more passionate) about the sport.

I'd bet most of the money he made from selling off his sister's Varsity, and those used bottles, and that worn out gear went to build another bike for a junior racer.

While I don't know you, I'm willing to say that Carl has probably done more for the sport of cycling than you could dream to and I find it offensive that you'd poke fun at him because of the gear he had for sale.

<snip>I find it offensive that you'd poke fun at him because of the gear he had for sale.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I didn't have time to get the guy's life story and he wasn't wearing a nametag that stated the he was Wisconsin's "God of Cycling."

I don't really know that my opinion would have changed had I known.

BTW - I wasn't knocking the Varsity. I would have rocked that rig.

I had a red Varsity like that one! Red handlebar tape and all. That thing was a tank. Of course, it was when I was 11 years old, so it wouldn't fit me now even if I knew what ever happened to it.... :(

Those Varsity's were built to last. How long would your current bike last if you pulled up to your house when your mom called you in for dinner and jumped off as it cruised to a stop in the middle of the front lawn and toppled over. The Varsity could take that all day long and then some.

Psimet2001- first coach Jerry and then Carl Wilkens, any of the other cycling bigwigs from Wisconsin you could slam to finish off this thread, you have done a nice job so far :)
Better take it easy, some the rides we are going to do next summer are in Wisconsin.

Ha! I was just thinking about how bent in the left side of the handlebars were from dropping the bike like that. It's amazing they didn't snap in two when I was riding....

I was waiting for him to say something about Vince Lombardi or Bart Starr. You know, just sign the "Psimet Dairyland Death Warrant" right here and now. He'll have to have kimbercop riding with him on any venture north from now on!

...ah the days of summer riding in Wisconsin. When the FIB's migrate to the beautiful North Country to use our wonderful roads and soak in the scenery they can only dream about there in the barren flatlands of the Land 'O Lincoln.

--First of all. I say WELCOME baby. Yous boys is OK wit me, even though the Bears still suck....

--Second of all. I say thank goodness CyLowe has gotten rid of puppets in his avatar. +1 from here.

--Third of all. I say I can't believe that I haven't a single story to tell with you guys here about riding a bike as a kid. My mom never let me have one...in part because I think her mom never let her have one.

--Fourth of all....is that even correct....I mean who says fourth of all anyway? I saw KenalO's folding bike at the Yellow Jersey bike shop in Madison. Pretty cool stuff for sure.

--Fifth of all....bike geeks are a wild breed, and they were out in force at the show. I respect the heck out of these people who give a lot of their time and effort to the sport by officiating, organizing races, wrenching, and in general, just promoting riding because they love it, and have for a long time in their lives.

There is certainly no money in it for them!

That's a given. Here's my favorite local Official, don't know his name...

Not that it should matter, but I do regularly donate to a few cycling organizations annually. I have done so off and on for close to 20 years, regularly for going on 5 years. Those of you who know me, and there are at least 3 in this thread that have actually been riding with me, know that I am an advocate of the sport.

That being said....these are pretty skanky water bottles.

If you want some money to help support junior racers then try a box with a sign that says, "Donate to help buy euipment and pay fees for Juniors"
