Classic & Vintage - restoring an old raleigh.

Ive got a bit of a problem. I started resotring an raleigh bike i got hold of. I started putting it back together today, and realised I've lost the wedge for the stem bolt. Can you buy them over the internet, or will I have to get a new stem.

Where can I get a new stem?

Most LBSs should have a stem wedge, either the
internal or external type.
If you need a new stem quill stems are still available,
but you may have a difficult time finding period correct one.
Another option for vintage parts is e-bay, not always
the cheapest but you can usually find what you require.
If you do need to go the internet route
check out the classifieds at
Classic Rendezvous (http://www.classicrendezvous.com/main.htm) and also check their
resource links for vintage parts.

I probably have one and you are welcome to it if we can figure out iwhat you need. Is there is a standard for stem bolt wedges ?

If it's a really old Raleigh, the stem is an odd size for today. You may need to improvise-like, say, with a moly bolt (except, since those old bikes use Whitworth threading, you won't be able to mix and match bits).

Can he replace the bolt and wedge? It seems feasible, what do you think?

Bikebud thank for the offer, but we live a few thousnad miles away. Im in scotland. I'll take it to my LBS, and see what they say.

Its kitted out with sachs huret .. is that any good?????????????????

Sachs-Huret came in a variety of qualities from so-so to quite nice. They were never real big here in the US where if it was Euro it was Simplex or Campy for the most part so I'm not an expert.

The Huret Jubilee was considered a fine and very light rear changer in the old days.

funny. i too am working on an old raleigh i bought off ebay. the sellers mate packed it like a box of rocks leaving me having to do a paint job on it, and wedge-less too.
