Using one, you can get to within two threads of the bottom of a blind hole.

ok i was in the tool cage we did not have any bottom taps (eubi you were right) i was grinding off the tip to make a bottom tap the attendant comes up to me and asks what i was doing i told him i was making a bottom tap he gets this giddy look and says i got your botton tap baby and giggles
and has been all week so that is why the thread

Don't you need a sprial flute to clear the chips on a bottom tap. Seems like the straight flutes on a standard tap would clog and break pretty easy doing it that way?

No shame in grinding down taps :). I met a guy who grinds broken HSS drill bits/end mill shanks into lathe bits.
As far as spiral taps go, it's nice. But most bottoming taps I've seen are straight flute. They make the flutes deep enough to allow room for chips. Adequate coolant flow will help also. Forming taps is where it's at :D
