They said this morning that the galaxy sold 2,000 tickets since announcing his signing. Wow....that's really gonna make up for the $250 million they are paying him. Soccer just isn't America's sport. No offense to Beckham, but he won't make much difference in the grand scheme of things as it relates to soccer. Good luck to him though. He's a great player.

If they sell those tickets for $125,000 each they'll make it back in no time.

It may not be America's sport, but you can't really compare MLS to say, EPL or La Liga.

A fool and their money are soon parted.

Football or soccer as it is know here is big everywhere in the world expect the USA.

I think they have paid too much money for a player in the twillight period off is career.

Where did this 250 million come from? Rich owners or what? It certainly isn't tv money.

It was reported on Dallas sports radio that Adidas was going to pay half of the salary, if the Galaxy used Adidas kit.

I dunno, I think he might make a huge difference. Real Madrid played a friendly with Real Salt Lake last summer and the crowd was double what it usually is for the regular league games, mostly due to Beckham (well, and Ronaldo). But then, we just signed Freddy Adu, so maybe we're just a little giddy. It'll be interesting to watch.

No athlete is worth that kind of money! It amazes me where we put our values... pay a guy who can kick a ball around piles and piles of money, yet our teachers, police and firefighters get squat.

Bah... the whole professional sports/entertainment thing is beyond me.

i guess with donavan as a teammate the galaxy can justly claim that they have the two most over-rated talents in MLS.

that said, i hope it actually does work out (i.e. raises awreness of the game, helps to encourage/develop the game).

i think of it more as a business decision. almost like a corporation is buying another brand to keep the franchise afloat. but, yeah, i agree - the dollar amounts are just insane!

The quarter billion figure apparently was invented by his agents / handlers / publicists. I heard the GM of the Galaxy on the radio say that Beckham's actual salary is nowhere remotely near that number.

If athletes aren't worth the money why is Oprah? Nobody besides a very few people have made a real enough difference in this world to be given such money for their efforts
and those people refuse money. You give a firefighter 1 million bucks and that's cool
Soon firefighting will become the next sport and no longer will it be about saving lives
it will be about the biggest and strongest and fastest and
People will begin saying it's entertainment
Fires will be broadcast live
Perversion

Firefighters and teachers don't want to live in mansions
they want to make a difference in lives
Many athletes and performers do, too
many people do
You should never be paid for being a good person.

Beckham isn't going to change USA soccer. Kids play soccer here and then leave it later on
In this age
one person will not revolutionize a team sport/public attitude towards it unless they are about the game

I won't be holding my breath for this image of a man to become our soccer saviour

Seeing as how hardly anyone could care less about soccer in the US, how the hell can the Galaxy pay him that much? I guess they're looking for a reason to file bankruptcy.

I'm still puzzling over this one. The $250 million figure must be bogus. Maybe if he were signing with the Yankees, I'd believe it.

It was big news when A-Rod, a young player in America's pasttime, signed for a 10 year, $250 million contract. Soccer isn't exactly easy on the body, and Beckham is 31. There's no way he's worth that much to an MLS team over 5 years of likely declining performance.

Of course, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before D.C. United signs Ronaldo on just to keep up the mockery of common sense in pro sports.

$250 million figure is correct but includes things like image rights etc...

As far as Beckham being old goes, he hasn't actually done anything at Real Madrid for the last 3 years so he should feel quite rested. Ronaldo the same except he is fat as well.

If an American club can sign Ronaldinho I would be impressed.

Beckham is here because he says he wants to make a difference and make the sport more popular, but of course that's easy to say with that kind of price tag. It's ridiculous the amount of money being paid to kick a piece of leather around.
