Bicycle Mechanics - Bottom Brackets

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm converting my one road bike to Shimano 105, I got the 105 crankset, FD, RD etc.. I forgot to get the BB when I ordered everything else. I have a XT BB sitting in my garage, it has the octa-spline which I believe is the same as the road shimano BB, but the width of it is 118 vs the 118.5, will this work? Or should I just go to my LBS and get the correct BB?

No. The depth of the splines is different. The depth of the splining in the crank(105) is about half the depth of the splining on a XT bb. Also if your 105 is double then you need the 109 bb any way.
It's a tripple so should be 118.5 I believe.. oh well atleast BB are inexpensive, I figured was worth a shot.

Yep, it is 118
Thanx for the help rev.chuck. I figure if I don't ask questions I'll never learn.
Hopefuly will get my old bike built up before end of may. Still need to finalize teh paint job.
FWIW, you are better off with an Ultegra BB. Those 105 BB's don't last long for me.
