General Cycling Discussion - newbie question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was wondering on a scale of 1-10 how do shimano deore components rate? Also, is tiagra better?:

Deore and Tiagra are equal in their own worlds, both are second from the bottom of the line (the lowest you can go and still look like a serious cyclest), but Deore is for mountain bikes while Tiagra is is for use on road bikes.

They are both the base level 9speed and hold up very well for the money.
Well, Sora and unnamed generic "Shimano SIS" junk is lower.....

Well I ride a Sora road bike, so I'm not "serious" either, but I've got an LX mountain bike.:) This is just what I see in the forums, and the info I got when I asked about road bike gruppos when researcing road bikes.

Hey, I ride a full Dura/Ace bike(and a full XT, and a trials with a bunch of funky stuff on it) and I am most assuredly not a serious cyclist. Like girls, I just wanna have fun.
Do you have a good time? Then you are there, does not really matter what it is. My favorite bike is more than twenty years old, is built mostly from used parts, has only one gear, no freewheel, and just a front brake. I don't even have a computer on it, because I ride because I love it, not to see how far I went.(Plus I could always ask someone else how far we went then add a couple of miles for effort.
well, if you ask shimano.. they don't really rate it as serious and not so serious.
its rated from recreational to sport/racing to high-end performance.
high-end component gruppos don't determine the level of the cyclist, but how much doh he spent on his bike.

Rev.Chuck/dexmax/etc:
Hear hear!
I get pretty dispirited when I see (or worse, feel) gear getting to be more important than the ride.
